Vladimir Rogov, a Russian government-appointed official in the southern Zaporizhzhia region currently under Moscow's control, said Major General Sergei Goryachev, chief of staff of Russia's 35th Army, died in Zaporizhzhia on Monday, where Ukrainian forces have retaken some territory.
The Russian Ministry of Defense has not yet confirmed this news, after the information was given by “Voenkor Z”, a Russian war correspondent and military blogger.
Mr. Rogov, on his official Telegram channel, wrote:
“The Russian army has lost one of its brightest and most effective military commanders, a man who combined the highest professionalism with courage. My deepest and most sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.”
Mr. Goryachev, 52, is a highly decorated military officer.
During his career, he participated in the Second Chechen War, commanded a tank brigade, oversaw a Russian military base in Tajikistan, and led Russian forces in the pro-Russian Transdniestra region of Moldova.
