Speaking to the Shura Council, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman said Saudi Arabia is working tirelessly towards the establishment of an independent Palestinian state, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
“We affirm that we will not establish diplomatic relations with Israel until that is achieved,” Mr. bin Salman emphasized.
In addition, Crown Prince bin Salman also strongly condemned Tel Aviv's military activities against the Palestinian people, and affirmed that Saudi Arabia aims to strengthen regional and international security through diplomatic solutions as well as implementing a friendly neighborly policy.
The statement hampered US efforts to reach an agreement to normalize relations.
In early September 2024, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken still “kept hope” of establishing relations with this Gulf country to bring potential benefits to Israel.
According to Mr. Blinken, the US is preparing to propose a security package to Saudi Arabia if Riyadh normalizes relations with Israel, while Washington is also trying to get its ally Tel Aviv to support the establishment of a Palestinian state.
“The two priorities for normalizing relations are peace in Gaza and a roadmap for the establishment of a Palestinian state,” Secretary of State Blinken emphasized.
However, the far-right government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is firmly opposed to the establishment of a Palestinian state.
Israel's attacks on Hamas have caused terrible casualties and destruction, causing Saudi Arabia to "hesitate" in expanding diplomatic relations with Tel Aviv.
