Yemen's Houthi rebels have claimed responsibility for a missile attack on central Israel on the morning of September 15.
In a statement, Houthi spokesman Brigadier General Yahya Sarea said the group had launched a new type of supersonic ballistic missile at a "military target" near Tel Aviv in support of the "Palestinian enclave" in the Gaza Strip, noting that Israeli air defenses had failed to intercept the missile.
The spokesman said the missile flew 2,040 kilometers in 11 minutes and 30 seconds. Based on information provided by Brigadier General Sarea, the missile traveled at a speed of 10,643 kilometers per hour, or just over Mach 8.6.
The missile fired by the Houthis set off sirens across central Israel at around 6:30 a.m. local time, with warnings heard from east of Tel Aviv to the settlement of Modiin. The Magen David Adom rescue service said it had treated nine people for minor injuries who were injured as they ran to shelters when the sirens sounded.
Israeli media reported that the missile landed in an open area in the Ben Shemen forest. The impact caused a fire near Kfar Daniel, a few kilometers southeast of Ben Gurion airport.
Shrapnel damage was also reported at a train station in the suburb of Modiin, about 25 km east of Tel Aviv, and at an industrial facility near the settlement of Ramla, about 16 km southeast of the city.
The Israel Defense Forces initially reported that the missile struck an open area, but later said it was investigating the results of the interceptor missiles fired. A military investigation has also been launched to determine why the missile was not intercepted before it reached Israeli airspace, or whether it was actually intercepted, in whole or in part.
Since Israel's war in Gaza erupted last October, the Houthis have waged a military campaign against Israel, targeting merchant ships linked to the country and launching direct attacks on Israeli territory with drones and missiles.
In July, a Houthi suicide drone launched from Yemen hit Tel Aviv, killing one man and wounding several others. In response, Israel launched an attack on the Houthi-controlled Red Sea port of al-Hodeida.
With the recent missile attack by the Houthis, Israel may take retaliatory action, but there is no information yet.
On the Houthi side, experts predict that Israel's response will most likely not be able to prevent future attacks by Houthi forces against Israel.
Both the US and the UK have carried out air strikes against the Houthis over the past ten months, but the group’s capabilities have so far remained unaffected.
