In boarding schools in the highlands, students have limited access to hot water for daily activities. Therefore, the bitter cold these days has significantly affected their health. It is heartwarming to know that this winter, many students at a boarding school in the highlands of Son La province have had hot water to use thanks to a very practical initiative of a young teacher.

Feeling pained every time he saw his students having to use cold water every winter, teacher Pham Van Tung, Huoi Mot Ethnic Boarding School, Song Ma District, and his colleagues came up with a model of composting rice husks, corn cobs, and sawdust to generate heat to get hot water for his students.

Teacher Pham Van Tung - Huoi Mot Boarding School, Song Ma District, Son La: "This model has a big advantage which is that it is compact, lightweight, the stove system uses a double-layer stainless steel system that retains heat well, is very easy to construct, and has low cost."

The project is operated from the idea of using locally available corn cobs, rice husks, and sawdust as the main raw materials to heat water in a double-layer stainless steel thermos tank. When the temperature is sufficient (60-70 degrees), it is transferred to a thermos tank to provide for students' daily use. When the water in the thermos tank runs out, it will automatically add water and operate the heating system to ensure hot water is always available for students to use continuously 24/24 hours. With an initial investment cost of less than 20 million VND, it is suitable for conditions in difficult areas.

Student Lau Gau Sua, Huoi Mot Boarding School, Song Ma District, Son La: “When there was no hot water, we used cold water from the tank to bathe, brush our teeth, wash our faces, and wash our clothes. Since the school has hot water, we no longer have to use cold water, and we really like it.”

The advantage of the model is that it can provide 2 cubic meters of hot water per day with only 15 thousand VND for the cost of purchasing input materials such as rice husks or corn cobs, sawdust. The model operates completely automatically without using electricity during operation. Parents and schools are very happy, many people also hope that this model will be replicated in many other localities, bringing a better life to children in difficult areas.

Mr. Nguyen Manh Hoang, Vice Principal, Huoi Mot Boarding School, Song Ma District, Son La: “It can be seen that this is a very effective model, especially in the cold winter, to better serve the school's students. When this hot water model is available, parents are very interested, creating conditions to encourage the spirit of learning as well as taking care of the health of students at school.”

The initiative not only saves costs, but also helps protect the environment, helps children in the highlands have hot water for daily use, contributing to improving living conditions and maintaining health.
