A student who invented an innovative product had difficulty finding a way to bring the product to the Vietnamese market. But with this research, the student received a scholarship to study abroad at a foreign university.

On the morning of November 15, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee held a workshop on innovation and improving the effectiveness of the creative emulation movement and creative awards in Ho Chi Minh City.

Scientific research does not produce products for the market

At the workshop, Dr. Huynh Anh Lan - member of the Ho Chi Minh City Union of Science and Technology Associations - said that the city currently lacks support mechanisms to bring innovative research to the market.

Ms. Lan shared the story of a student who created a wheelchair that provided full support applications for patients, and was recognized. However, after that, this student could not reach the units to bring the product to market.

"That student asked for my support. Although I tried to introduce the product to many places, it was unsuccessful. After that, I wrote a letter of introduction in English for a university abroad. When the university saw the student's research, they gave him a scholarship to study abroad," Ms. Lan cited.

Ms. Lan believes that the recent creative awards of Ho Chi Minh City have been effective in promoting creative competition. However, to improve the effectiveness of creative products, Ho Chi Minh City needs to have a promotion and connection policy so that scientific research products can be put into practice.

For inventors, success is not about being praised or receiving bonuses, but about research and innovation results being widely applied and creating value in life.

Sharing the same opinion with Ms. Lan, inventor Tran Duy Hao - who won the Ho Chi Minh City Innovation Award - raised the question of how effective the solutions are in practice after being recognized and rewarded, and whether the solutions have been applied and replicated.

According to Mr. Hao, currently, creative solutions still lack connections for replication. Mr. Hao cited the example of the People's Committee of District 1 applying the "Geographic Information System (WEBGIS) to manage business households in real time". But he wondered whether this solution would be replicated in other localities or whether each locality would research on its own while the solution already existed.

Policy research puts innovative solutions into practice

Mr. Nguyen Viet Tuan, who participated in judging the topics of the Ho Chi Minh City Innovation Award, suggested that Ho Chi Minh City also needs a council to evaluate and summarize the applicability of products and scientific research topics, thereby proposing solutions to promote the application of innovative solutions into practice.

Vice Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Vo Van Hoan delivered a concluding speech - Photo: THAO LE

In his concluding remarks at the workshop, Mr. Vo Van Hoan - Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee - said that creativity must be a competitive movement in labor. Creativity must come first, otherwise there will be no breakthrough in the activities of each agency and unit.

According to Mr. Hoan, the activities of state agencies are a group of jobs that are difficult to be creative because they must follow regulations, especially in the context of overlapping legal regulations. However, life changes every day, and lack of creativity is the source of stagnation, and stagnant state agencies will lead to stagnation in society, holding back development.

Mr. Hoan requested to innovate the method, content, and criteria of the Ho Chi Minh City Innovation Award. In particular, it is necessary to consider the practical effectiveness of the solutions winning the Ho Chi Minh City Innovation Award.

Mr. Hoan acknowledged that Ho Chi Minh City currently lacks comprehensive policies for creative awards, from promoting research, judging, recognition and especially after recognition. Ho Chi Minh City needs to study policies to put creative solutions into practice.
