On December 1, Hyundai Korea announced a new invention, called Uni Wheel, a system that reduces the powertrain by integrating the drivetrain components onto the wheel.
By using a series of gears located inside the wheel, power from a small motor is also transmitted to the wheel with enough torque to move it.
Sending power to each wheel individually benefits driving performance and safety, by allowing each corner of the vehicle to react independently to its terrain circumstances.

This innovation allows Hyundai to use a small motor on each wheel instead of relying on a large drive unit for the entire axle.
Because of the arrangement of the gears, they can move inside the shaft while still transmitting power.
As a result, the connection between the wheel and the engine can slide up and down freely, which means that performance losses associated with operation are eliminated, improving power and fuel efficiency and increasing driving range.

Hyundai says the Uni Wheel can be compacted into wheels as small as 4 inches in diameter, making it ideal for personal mobility devices.
It can also work with wheels up to 25 inches in size for larger vehicles, such as MPVs and SUVs.
The company says it has tested the device's durability and the Uni Wheel performed well in all tests, but has not said when the Uni Wheel will hit the market.
Hyundai has filed patents in key markets such as Korea, Europe and the United States.
