Riot Games postpones LCS 2023 due to problems with gamers

According to The Verge , Riot Games has just announced that they will postpone the 2023 LCS (League of Legends tournament in North America) Summer Split by two weeks, a move that comes after many gamers voted to retire from the competition due to a recent controversial announcement by the company. The tournament was previously scheduled to be held on Thursday, June 1.

Accordingly, a series of gamers have chosen to withdraw from the tournament after Riot Games announced that it would disband the youth teams in the Academy League and the grassroots tournament, which has sparked criticism from the LCS Players Association (LCSPA). Most gamers expressed dissatisfaction with Riot's decision, saying that this action will cut off the development path of young League of Legends talents.

In a blog post, Naz Aletaha, head of League of Legends esports at Riot Games, said Riot's two-week postponement of the tournament will hopefully give them time to talk with the LCSPA and teams.

However, Aletaha said that if the tournament continues to be delayed, Riot Games will cancel the entire LCS summer season. If that happens, the LCS region will also not be able to qualify for this year's world finals.

Aletaha also met the LCSPA's list of five demands, though it only committed to one change: Riot will give Rally Cry, the organization it partners with in the NACL, an additional $300,000 to kick off the 2023 NACL season on June 10.

The LCSPA has yet to respond to Riot Games' decision. The association also recently asked players not to compete if they were selected to replace LCS players who are withdrawing from the league.
