Due to the severe cold weather, farmers in Ha Tinh are proactively and flexibly implementing solutions to minimize damage to the planted spring rice crop.
In recent days, the temperature has dropped sharply to 9 - 12 degrees Celsius, negatively affecting agricultural production in Ha Tinh. Mr. Truong Quang Tu - Bac Thuong village, Thach Dai commune (Thach Ha) said: "My family has just planted Bac Thinh, Thien Uu, Nep 98, Hana No. 7 varieties a week ago. The cold weather and rain have caused our family's 7 sao of rice to be flooded. We have to constantly stay in the fields to drain the water in time, only maintaining the water level on the rice field at 2 - 3 cm as recommended by experts so that the rice does not get flooded."
Mr. Truong Quang Tu (Thach Dai commune, Thach Ha) drained water from the field, only maintaining the water level according to the recommendations of the professional sector.
Currently, farmers in the remaining 21 communes and towns of Thach Ha district are also busy going to the fields to implement measures to cope with extreme weather, minimizing damage to the spring rice area that has been sown directly. This spring crop, the whole district strives to sow 7,970 hectares of rice of all kinds, to date, 5,148 hectares have been sown, reaching a rate of 64.6%.
Farmers in Thach Ha stick to their fields, monitoring the spring rice acreage they have sown in the face of extreme weather conditions.
Mr. Nguyen Van Sau - Vice Chairman of Thach Ha District People's Committee said that, in the face of extreme weather developments, the District People's Committee has issued a document requesting communes and towns to direct professional staff to regularly monitor the fields, promptly inspect and remedy cold prevention work for crops. At the same time, proactively prepare plans and necessary conditions to respond to unusual weather developments, have plans to prepare short-term varieties and make provisions in case of severe cold, prolonged cold that kills seedlings and direct-sown rice.
"The requirement for localities is to be flexible in directing the time of sowing based on the seasonal calendar and weather developments, absolutely do not sow when the temperature is below 13 degrees Celsius. For the planted rice area, it is necessary to regulate the appropriate water level in the fields to keep the rice warm, take care when the weather is favorable, ensure appropriate density; do not fertilize rice on cold days below 15 degrees Celsius, if the rice dies, it must be replanted and cared for promptly when the weather is warm", the Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Thach Ha district emphasized.
In Loc Ha district, up to now, the locality has completed sowing 1,050 ha/3,309 ha (of which 800 ha were directly sown and 250 ha were transplanted). Due to the severe cold weather in recent days, farmers in Loc Ha district have temporarily stopped spring rice production.
Ms. Tran Thi Thao (Binh An commune, Loc Ha) went to the field to check the rice seedlings.
Ms. Tran Thi Thao, residing in Quyet Thang village, Binh An commune (Loc Ha) shared: “This crop, my family produced more than 1 acre of late rice varieties such as: VNR 20, Ha Phat 3, VT404... The seedlings have been planted for 20 days, and are now ready for transplanting. However, due to the cold weather, my family had to temporarily stop production. Every day, we visit the fields and cover them with plastic to avoid harming the development and growth of the seedlings.”
Mr. Dau Ngoc Ty - Vice Chairman of Binh An Commune People's Committee said: "In the spring crop of 2024, the whole commune aims to produce 446 hectares, of which 70% of direct sowing has been completed, while 30% of the transplanted area cannot be planted due to severe cold. The locality will continue to monitor weather developments, encourage farmers to implement measures as recommended by the professional sector to protect the planted rice area and proceed with planting when the weather is favorable."
It is known that up to now, the whole province has planted 33,459/59,107 hectares of rice, reaching 56.6% of the plan, of which the direct sowing area is 31,778 hectares, the transplanting area is 1,681 hectares; the seedling area is 304.75 hectares.
Farmers need to prepare enough seedlings and reserve rice seeds to ensure quality to proactively overcome production when necessary.
According to Mr. Phan Van Huan - Head of Cultivation Department (Ha Tinh Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection), in the context of severe cold weather, for the planted rice area, farmers need to maintain the water level on the field from 2 - 3 cm; conduct pruning, ensure appropriate density; do not fertilize rice on cold days below 15 degrees Celsius; if the rice dies, it must be replanted and cared for promptly when the weather is warm.
For areas that have not been planted with seedlings and sown directly, it is necessary to strengthen inspection, supervision and strict direction on the time of soaking and incubation, avoiding the time of sowing when it is cold. Localities also need to be proactive and ready with timely cold prevention and control plans; prepare enough seedlings and reserve rice seeds to ensure quality to proactively overcome when necessary, ensuring the plan. Proactively detect and prevent rice blast disease right from the beginning of the season to limit the source of the disease; guide timely prevention measures for rats, stem borers, green aphids, root nematodes, etc.
