Quang Yen Town is one of the localities with a large vegetable growing area in the province. Although severely affected by storm No. 3, these days, farmers in Quang Yen Town are quickly restoring vegetable growing areas to minimize damage, quickly restore production and ensure vegetable supply to the market.
Tien An Commune is the largest vegetable growing area in Quang Yen Town. The whole commune has more than 435 hectares of various vegetables, of which 170 hectares are safe vegetables. Due to the impact of storm No. 3 and heavy rain after the storm, many vegetable growing areas in the commune were collapsed and crushed... Currently, farmers in Tien An Commune are urgently restoring vegetable growing areas and soon resuming production.
Taking advantage of the sunny weather, Mr. Pham Van Thu (Dinh village, Tien An commune, Quang Yen town) went to his family's field to work the soil, preparing for a new vegetable crop. After the storm, the entire vegetable field that was green and fresh nearly a week ago and was ready for harvest was now broken and flooded. His family's 5 sao of vegetables and green onions that were ready for harvest were all broken and damaged, plus the continuous rainwater soaked everything, so they had to be abandoned, with an estimated loss of tens of millions of dong, mainly in production costs, fertilizer, seeds, and labor.
Urgently hoeing the land, Mr. Pham Van Thu shared: “After storm No. 3, despite the great damage, my family and many farmers growing safe vegetables in Dinh village are determined to overcome the consequences, focusing on land preparation, cleaning the fields to prepare for winter crop planting. This is the main crop of the year, so taking advantage of this time, the weather is favorable, farmers choose suitable crop varieties, promptly plant the new crop with the hope of increasing output and income to compensate for the damage caused by storm No. 3”.
Similarly, Ms. Ngo Thi Phuong (Bai 2 village, Tien An commune, Quang Yen town) said: “Agriculture cannot avoid damage caused by natural disasters. However, storm No. 3 was so terrible that it caused the most damage to people in the safe vegetable growing area of Tien An. However, people still encouraged each other that as long as there are people and land, there is still much hope. As soon as the storm passed, my family mobilized human resources to make efforts to overcome the consequences, clean the fields, clear and create drainage ditches, drain the water from the fields, lightly till the beds, promptly plant seeds, and take care of more than 3 sao of vegetables in time for the next harvest. If all goes well, the family is expected to harvest 6-7 quintals of vegetables and tubers/sao”.
According to statistics, storm No. 3 caused serious damage to the agricultural sector of Quang Yen town. In the field of cultivation alone, Quang Yen town had more than 1,418 hectares of rice flooded (accounting for 50% of the area); 218.6 hectares of crops were completely damaged (accounting for 60% of the vegetable area).
Mr. Nguyen Van Bac, Vice Chairman of Quang Yen Town People's Committee, said: In addition to overcoming the consequences of storm No. 3, the locality is actively supporting people to urgently restore agricultural production after the storm. Immediately after the storm, the locality focused on draining water to save the flooded rice and crop areas. As for vegetables with areas that can be repaired, the locality has instructed people to actively care for them to recover and harvest. At the same time, the locality has instructed people to urgently clean up and sanitize fields and gardens to quickly and effectively restore production and cultivation. The fact that farmers in the town have returned to production right after the storm has passed is an optimistic sign; helping people's lives to stabilize production soon, contributing to meeting the demand for vegetables for the upcoming Tet season.
