2024 is the first year the Golden Globes will be held after changing ownership. In June, the HFPA (Hollywood Foreign Press Association) officially sold the awards to Dick Clark Productions and Eldridge Industries after a series of scandals about racism within its membership.
This year, 300 journalists from 76 countries selected the nominees and winners.
The awards ceremony on the evening of January 7 (US time, morning of January 8) Vietnam time ended with the announcement of the most important category: Best Film in the Drama genre went to Oppenheimer .
It was also the most popular film at this year's awards ceremony and one of the most nominated films, with eight nominations. Before winning the award, the film had grossed more than $950 million worldwide .
On stage to accept the award, producer Emma Thomas, who is also the wife of director Christopher Nolan, said: "I'm so happy that Chris has been recognised. I just think what he does is unlike anything anyone else is doing." She also revealed that her husband "brings out the best in people by being the best."
Christopher Nolan won his first Best Director award, and it was no surprise.
The film also brought double wins to actors Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr. in the categories of Best Actor in a Drama and Best Supporting Actor.
As one of the first awards announced on the night, Robert Downey Jr. admitted that he had to take a drug to stay calm in case he had to give an acceptance speech.
The veteran actor also said that many people have come up to him and said that his role in the film is "so subtle that it is unrecognizable". He shared that his agent was right to urge him to accept the role. In particular, he thanked his wife for helping him step out of his comfort zone.
As for Cillian Murphy, he revealed that when he arrived on Nolan's set, he knew it was different. "I could see the level of rigor, focus and dedication of a visionary and master director," he shared. At the same time, he did not forget to thank the cast and called the experience on the project "magical". In particular, the actor also had kind words for his colleagues on the nomination list, saying that they were all "legendary".
Oppenheimer also won for Best Original Score.
Emma Stone won her second Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for Poor Things . She was first nominated in 2011 for Easy A before winning her first Golden Globe in 2017 for La La Land . The film also won Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.
In the acting categories, Best Actress (Drama) went to Lily Gladstone, Killers of the Flower Moon . Best Actor (Musical/Comedy) went to Paul Giamatti, The Holdovers . Best Supporting Actress went to Da'Vine Joy Randolph, The Holdovers .
The best non-English language film category went to Anatomy of a Fall , which also won best screenplay.
The Best Animated Film category unexpectedly named The Boy and the Heron after surpassing a series of famous names of the past year such as: Elemental, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Suzume, Wish .
The latest work from beloved Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki is his first film to top the North American box office.
The film earned just under $13 million in its opening weekend, the biggest opening weekend ever for a film by Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli, which he co-founded, according to Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore.
The Boy and the Heron, which tells the story of a child who travels to a mysterious world after his mother dies, hits theaters across the US in December.
The television categories also saw history as Ali Wong and Steven Yeun became the first actors of Asian descent to win in their respective categories. Both won Best Actor and Actress in a Limited Series, Anthology Series or Television Movie for their roles in Beef .
Beef is also the movie that was nominated in this category for movies.
The Bear also had a huge awards night with a slew of wins: Best Television Series (Musical/Comedy), Best Actor and Actress for Jeremy Allen White and Ayo Edebiri.
The biggest winner in the TV series category was Succession with a series of awards: Best Drama Series, Best Actor and Actress in a Drama Series for Kieran Culkin and Sarah Snook, Best Supporting Actor in a TV Series (Matthew Macfadyen).
