Pochettino: 'I'm very, very angry'

VnExpressVnExpress26/11/2023

Coach Mauricio Pochettino was upset and considered the 1-4 defeat to Newcastle in round 13 of the Premier League as Chelsea's worst match.

"Games like this make me very, very, very, very angry," Pochettino said in his post-match press conference at St James' Park. "We have to show character. We cannot play football like this."

Pochettino said Newcastle were not playing well, but Chelsea's players gave the win to their opponents. The Argentine said that while they needed to make things difficult for Newcastle, his players conceded too easily and were too weak in the tackles. "They didn't show that they were playing for something important," he added.

According to Pochettino, Chelsea's problem is maturity. He believes that the players are young and inexperienced, and advises them to continue learning, playing solidly, being ready to compete and compete better. Pochettino emphasizes that this is what big teams do regularly every week with a frequency of three matches a day. "We just had the worst match of the season," Pochettino commented. "The players are not connected to each other. In football there are many things that create confidence and strength. We know what is happening and will try to change."

In round 12, Chelsea played one of their best matches of the season, drawing 4-4 with defending champions Man City. However, they did not show much yesterday. After Alexander Isak opened the scoring in the 13th minute, the visitors equalized 1-1 thanks to a direct free kick from Raheem Sterling. But that was all they could do. After the break, Newcastle made the most of the difference in their ability to handle situations and take advantage of opportunities. In the 60th and 61st minutes, Jamaal Lascelles and Joelinton scored to raise the score to 3-1 for the home team. Chelsea had to play with 10 men from the 73rd minute, because Reece James was sent off. Then 10 minutes later, Anthony Gordon curled the ball to seal a 4-1 victory for Newcastle - a team that had to play without more than 10 players due to injury.

After this match, Chelsea is still ranked 10th with 16 points. Since the beginning of the season, Pochettino's team has only won four, drawn four and lost five.
