Parents are upset and complain that 'they have to go to school to clean up after their children before they get off work'

A person whose child studies at Ngo Thi Nham Primary School (Ta Thanh Oai Commune, Thanh Tri District, Hanoi) recently wrote a letter reflecting on the fact that parents have to come to school to clean up after their children at 5:00 p.m. every day.

According to this person, each grade level must pay 500,000 VND/month to hire someone to clean the classroom. If they do not hire someone, parents will have to come and clean instead. Since the beginning of the school year, many parents have had to come to school every day to clean the classroom as requested.

"Parents are all at work, at that time everyone is at work, or just starting to go home, requiring them to be there at exactly 5pm to clean the classroom is making it difficult for parents," this person reflected.

In the letter, parents were upset about having to pay many additional fees at the first meeting of the year, specifically 300,000 VND to support the purchase of air conditioners (even though they had previously registered their children for classes with air conditioners), and an additional 100,000 VND to contribute to the construction of an artificial turf field "gifted" to the school. If they did not support, the school would immediately have the security guards remove the 2 air conditioners that the students were using because "these air conditioners were contributed by upperclass students".

In addition, the above parent said that students must pay the full amount according to the list of parents' representatives, regardless of whether they participate or not. Many parents of other grades also questioned the unreasonable fees at the beginning of the school year such as building railings, fences around the school, teachers' chairs, etc.

In response to feedback from parents, Ms. Hoang Thi Thu Ha - Principal of Ngo Thi Nham Primary School said that the school is still in the process of collecting opinions and has not collected any fees.

Regarding the fact that each class has to pay 500,000 VND/month to hire a cleaner, Ms. Ha affirmed that cleaning is the responsibility of the students, not the parents.

"We will find out which classes require parents to be on duty at 5 p.m.," the principal said, adding that the school only hires cleaning services for common areas outside the classrooms and has never required parents to be on duty or pay a monthly cleaning fee.

Regarding the call for parents to support 10 new air conditioners, Ms. Hoang Thi Thu Ha explained that many air conditioners in grades 4 and 5 were broken and could not be repaired, so they had to be taken down and stored in storage; buying replacements was still the policy in the process of mobilizing parents. Not only this year but also in previous years, parents were also asked to contribute money to build fences, railings, buy teachers' chairs, etc.

Mr. Pham Van Ngát, Head of the Department of Education and Training of Thanh Tri district, said that the unit will check and verify information from both sides regarding revenue and expenditure for the new school year 2024-2025.
