Developing Hue tourism towards green growth, reducing plastic waste

Thua Thien Hue is one of the key tourist destinations in Vietnam. Realizing that reducing plastic waste is one of the necessary trends to develop tourism towards green and sustainable growth, recently, the Department of Tourism of Thua Thien Hue province and the WWF Vietnam Project have coordinated to sign a Plan to implement activities within the framework of the Project "Hue - Plastic Reduction City in Central Vietnam" with the title: Reducing plastic waste in the tourism industry of Thua Thien Hue in the period of 2023-2025.

The activities have the general objective of jointly implementing interventions to reduce the amount of plastic generated in the tourism business of Hue city. Contribute to reducing the loss of plastic waste into the natural environment and towards Hue becoming a destination without plastic waste. At the same time, contribute to the goal of building Hue city with the characteristics of "Heritage, ecology, landscape, environmentally friendly and smart".

At the workshop, Mr. Hoang Phuoc Nhat, Deputy Director of the Department of Tourism of Thua Thien Hue province, said that according to the plan, there are 7 priority tasks to be implemented to reduce plastic waste in the tourism industry of Thua Thien Hue in the period of 2023 - 2025. Up to now, 80% of the tasks have been completed and the remaining will continue to be implemented in the fourth quarter of 2024 and 2025.

Specifically, the Department of Tourism of Thua Thien Hue province has coordinated with the Tourism Association and the WWF-Vietnam Project to organize training courses for managers and staff of tourism businesses, services, hotels, travel agencies and tourist attractions to raise awareness of plastic reduction in the tourism industry. In addition, propaganda work has been integrated to raise awareness of the harmful effects of plastic waste through knowledge update courses for domestic and international tour guides. In particular, the Community Tourism Association under the Tourism Association has also coordinated training for managers/business owners at community tourism sites and cultural tourism sites.

In addition, the Thua Thien Hue tourism industry also mobilizes and monitors units to implement solutions to reduce plastic waste at hotels, travel agencies and tourist destinations. Implement plans to reduce plastic at hotels. Develop and put into operation tours that do not use disposable plastic products, tourist destinations that do not use disposable plastic products. Connect and strengthen the development of activities for the Hue city plastic reduction action partner group. Promote the promotion of tourist destinations that reduce plastic waste.

"The joint efforts to protect the environment and reduce plastic pollution of the Thua Thien Hue tourism industry in the commitment and practice of reducing plastic and classifying waste at source in the recent past have not only contributed to building the image of Hue city as an environmentally friendly city in the eyes of tourists, but also spread to the community, developing the image of Hue as a clean ASEAN tourist city, aiming to build Hue into a plastic-reducing city in Central Vietnam", Mr. Hoang Phuoc Nhat emphasized.

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Phuc, Director of the Department of Tourism of Thua Thien Hue province, at the end of 2019, the Politburo issued Resolution No. 54-NQ/TW on the construction and development of Thua Thien Hue province until 2030, with a vision to 2045. In which, by 2025, Thua Thien Hue will become a centrally-run city on the basis of preserving and promoting the values ​​of the ancient capital's heritage and Hue's cultural identity with cultural, heritage, ecological, landscape, environmentally friendly and smart characteristics. Therefore, the task of rapid and sustainable development towards green growth and green economy is a consistent and comprehensive development strategy that Thua Thien Hue province is focusing on implementing in various fields, including tourism.

Completing the tasks in the plan on plastic waste reduction of Thua Thien Hue tourism industry in the period of 2023-2025 not only contributes positively and effectively to the general orientation of the province as well as the tourism industry in the coming period, but also contributes to turning Hue's distinct advantages in tourism into real values ​​in the tourism development competitiveness scale. Bringing Hue tourism to develop commensurate with its potential with activities, products and the cooperation of the business community, people and tourists with local authorities to increase green tourism activities and sustainable development.

At this workshop, in addition to discussing and contributing ideas on plastic waste reduction activities in the tourism industry in the past and orienting tasks in the coming time, some typical tourism units in the area shared good initiatives and models in plastic waste reduction; 5 hotels and 1 tour signed a commitment to implement plastic waste reduction activities at the grassroots level.
