Heritage and tourism activities always interact and support each other to develop. When heritage is a resource for the tourism industry to exploit, tourism breathes life, promotes and enhances the value of heritage.

"Open pit gold mine"

More than 1,000 historical and cultural relics have been inventoried. More than 550 intangible cultural heritages have been counted. These are tangible and intangible cultural heritages in the province, "open-pit gold mines" that are being systematically and effectively exploited by the tourism industry.

Mr. Hoang Ngoc Thinh, Deputy Head of the Heritage Management Department (Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism): Closely linking tourism businesses and localities with heritage is a way to help the tourism industry develop, while creating local revenue to "nourish" the heritage to be upgraded.

The ancient features include the system of communal houses, temples, and pagodas with East Asian architectural art, such as: Phu Lien Pagoda, Dan Pagoda, Hang Pagoda (Thai Nguyen City); Son Duoc Pagoda (Dai Tu); Thuan Luong Pagoda (Song Cong City); Duom Temple (Phu Luong); Cau Muoi Communal House, Temple, and Pagoda relic complex (Phu Binh)... After 9 years of the whole country's long and arduous resistance war, village and land names such as: Khau Ty (Diem Mac); Khuon Tat (Phu Dinh); Bao Bien (Bao Linh); Lang Quang (Dinh Bien)... in Dinh Hoa district became red addresses for traditional education.

Mr. Do Trong Hiep, Chairman of Thai Nguyen Province Tourism Association: Through tourism activities, heritage is widely introduced and promoted to the people, tourists, especially students, in the process of practical experience to better understand a historical period of the country; about a traditional cultural beauty of a nation, a country.

There are still heroic vestiges of the resistance war against the American imperialists. Standing tall next to Gia Bay Bridge (Thai Nguyen City) is a stele recording the names of soldiers of the Hoang Van Thu Sub-region Self-Defense Platoon. Majestic and solemn, a National Historical Relic of 60 martyrs of the 915th Youth Volunteer Company, 91st Team of Bac Thai (Thai Nguyen City). And in Than Sa Commune (Vo Nhai), there is the Mai Da Nguom archaeological site - an archaeological site of the Paleolithic era with the famous Nguom industry, traces of humans living about 41,500 years ago.

From tourism, fairy tales about the heavens and earths of ethnic groups are told for tourists to enjoy.

Along with the system of architectural and artistic relics, historical and archaeological relics, in the land of half fields, half mountains of Thai Nguyen, there is also a treasure trove of intangible cultural heritage imbued with national cultural identity, typically: Tham Roc dry puppetry of the Tay people, the Praying for the Season Festival of the San Chi people, Soong Co singing of the San Diu people, Tac Xinh dance of the San Chay people and the Cap Sac ceremony of the Dao people... If historical relics become destinations, intangible cultural heritages become spiritual "specialties" performed and exchanged between local people and tourists.

Enhance the value of heritage

Sharing with us, Dr. Mai Thi Hanh, lecturer at Hanoi National University, said: Heritage exists in both tangible and intangible forms. However, if it is only stored and preserved, it will be difficult for heritage to promote its value, even becoming meaningless and quickly fading away over time.

The Xong Co singing of the Ngai ethnic group in Thai Nguyen is a proof. It has faded to the point of almost no longer existing in the spiritual life of the people. Only when the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism intervened, it took many months for the artisans to record 5 songs of their ethnic group. In fact, there are many cultural and historical relics and some typical cultural beauties of ethnic groups that have been lost, the State has to invest billions of VND along with a lot of time and effort to restore and preserve them.

Many intangible cultural heritages are preserved, passed down and promoted by the people through performing arts activities to serve tourists. Typically, intangible cultural heritages have been included in the List of National Intangible Cultural Heritages by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism such as: Tac Xinh Dance of the San Chay ethnic group; Nhay Tet Ritual of the Dao ethnic group; Long Tong Festival of the Tay ethnic group...

In particular, the folk knowledge of growing and processing tea in Tan Cuong tea area (Thai Nguyen city) has been included in the National Intangible Cultural Heritage List. Artisan Le Quang Nghin, Hong Thai 2 hamlet, Tan Cuong commune, was excited: My family has lived on tea for generations, so I am happy that growing and processing tea is classified as folk knowledge. Especially since being classified as a heritage by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the tea products of Tan Cuong area have become much more valuable than before. The happiest thing is that Tan Cuong tea area often has domestic and international tourists coming to visit and experience.

In developing tourism associated with preserving and promoting heritage values, Thai Nguyen has both called for investors to cooperate in tourism development and coordinated with provinces and cities across the country to organize trade and tourism promotion activities. Mr. Nguyen Tung Lam, Head of the Tourism Department (Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism), concluded: Through tourism activities, the value of tangible and intangible cultural heritages is enhanced and widely spread not only domestically, but also with tourists to many continents around the world.
