Petrovietnam/PV GAS works with AES and Cheniere Energy on LNG power

The goal of the working sessions between Petrovietnam and AES and Cheniere Energy is to implement LNG power projects and ensure LNG supply for Vietnam.

At the working session with AES Group, the two sides shared specific information on the implementation status of the Son My LNG Port Warehouse project chain and the Son My 2 Gas Power Plant Project invested by AES.

In which, the Son My 2 Power Plant project has submitted its Feasibility Study Report to the Ministry of Industry and Trade for appraisal and is being supplemented according to comments from the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

Petrovietnam's delegation led by Chairman of the Board of Directors Le Manh Hung worked with AES representatives.

Regarding the Son My LNG Terminal project, in July 2023, the People's Committee of Binh Thuan province issued a decision approving the investment policy and approving the project investor, Son My LNG Terminal Company. In the second quarter of 2024, the project investor (Son My LNG Terminal Company Limited) submitted the project's Feasibility Study Report to the Ministry of Industry and Trade for appraisal and will proceed to approve the project's Feasibility Study Report to implement the next steps.

Mr. Juan Ignacio Rubiolo, Senior Vice President of AES Corporation, said that AES has been present in Vietnam for more than 15 years with many investment projects and is committed to a long-term presence here as well as supporting Vietnam's energy transition and green economy.

AES Group expressed its desire to cooperate with Vietnamese enterprises such as Petorvietnam, PV GAS and Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN) to optimize clean energy supply, provide for Vietnam's industrial projects, improve and ensure the reliability of energy supply for Vietnam.

AES's future investment orientation is clean energy and renewable energy, specifically aiming to provide energy saving and renewable energy solutions; provide electricity storage systems for renewable energy; and provide hydrogen solutions.

Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Vietnam Oil and Gas Group (Petrovietnam) Le Manh Hung said that the Prime Minister has approved the restructuring project of the Group for the period up to 2025, including promoting the development of clean energy sources, renewable energy, new energy such as offshore wind power, hydrogen, low-carbon fuels in line with the orientation of energy transition and environmental protection.

To realize that strategic goal, Petrovietnam is also looking for large, experienced partners in the world such as AES Corporation to cooperate in researching and investing in new projects. Petrovietnam leaders committed to supporting the implementation of the above-mentioned gas-power project chain, contributing to ensuring national energy security as well as being consistent with the approved Power Plan VIII.

The meeting between Petrovietnam/PV GAS and Cheniere Energy aims to promote strategic cooperation in supplying LNG to Vietnam, meeting the country's growing energy demand.

Vietnam is currently experiencing rapid economic growth, leading to a high demand for energy. LNG is considered a key source of energy in the future, helping to ensure energy security and reduce environmental impacts compared to traditional fossil fuels.

Petrovietnam and PV GAS delegation worked with Cheniere Energy.

Therefore, developing LNG projects, as well as cooperating with major suppliers to import LNG, is a priority strategy of PV GAS.

Cheniere Energy is the world’s second-largest LNG producer and fourth-largest supplier. With its large-scale port and liquefaction facilities at the Sabin Pas and Corpus Christi projects, Cheniere is well-positioned to meet Vietnam’s needs.

Cheniere Energy's leadership highly appreciates and values the potential of the Vietnamese market and wishes to build a long-term relationship with PV GAS to ensure stability in supply and price for Vietnam in the context of many fluctuations in the global energy market.

PV GAS's search for an LNG supplier from the US like Cheniere is not only a strategic step to ensure national energy security, but also helps promote the development of the LNG market in Vietnam, while contributing to the country's green and sustainable development goals.

The leaders of the two sides agreed to continue negotiations and exchanges to reach official cooperation agreements, promising to bring great benefits to both sides and to the Vietnamese energy market.
