On August 27 (local time), Mr. Trump announced that he had agreed with Vice President Kamala Harris on the rules for the debate between the two on September 10. The Republican candidate affirmed that the rules of the June 27 debate between him and President Joe Biden will remain the same for the upcoming debate. "The candidates will stand and debate and no one will be allowed to bring notes. We have been informed by ABC (the host) that the debate will be 'fair and equal' and neither side will be allowed to ask questions first," Mr. Trump affirmed. Among the rules mentioned above by Mr. Trump is that the microphones of the two candidates will be turned off when they are not answering. This goes against Ms. Harris' wishes. On August 26, Ms. Harris's campaign team demanded that both candidates' microphones be turned on throughout the debate, while Mr. Trump's team threatened to cancel the debate if ABC accepted this request. Harris's team said on August 27: "Both candidates have publicly expressed their acceptance of debates with open microphones throughout the event to allow for substantive exchanges at the highest level. However, it appears that Mr. Trump is letting his subordinates make decisions for him. Sad!"
