President Trump "transforms" the White House, gold-plating the Oval Office

(Dan Tri) - Since taking office, US President Donald Trump has been making a series of changes at the White House, reshaping the important symbol of his administration, the Oval Office.

This room, originally minimalist in style, is now adorned with gilded details, grand portraits and carefully selected display pieces.

Observers say that Mr. Trump seems to be illustrating the goal he has stated before, bringing America into a golden age. And it starts right in his office.

The change is evident in the tripling of paintings on the walls, shelves and surfaces filled with statues, flags and ornaments, and gold accents scattered throughout the room.

Gilded Rococo mirrors hang over the doors, golden eagles top the side tables, and tiny gold angels, shipped directly from the Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, are placed over the doorways.

Even the TV remote in a nearby room is gold-plated. Sources say Trump once considered installing a chandelier in the Oval Office, though the idea now seems unlikely.

The Oval Office now resembles an elaborate art gallery, filled with portraits of American politicians. Mr. Trump personally selected nearly 20 paintings, significantly more than the six under former President Joe Biden or the two under Barack Obama.

The curtain system also changed to yellow to match the new layout of the room (Photo: AFP).

For Mr Trump, the Oval Office is more than just a place to work. His previous office in Trump Tower in New York was decorated in a similar style, filled with collectibles, framed pictures and magazine covers. His approach to the White House has remained the same, with everything added to the room at his direction.

Since returning, Mr. Trump has used the Oval Office as the setting for many of the key moments of his tenure.

He has held meetings there, including a tense encounter with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and it is also where he swears in cabinet members and makes near-daily press appearances.

His desk is carefully arranged with photographs, including one of his mother.

Among the changes, Mr. Trump removed the traditional ivy pots above the fireplace, which were a gift from the John F. Kennedy administration. Instead, he placed seven meticulously arranged gold pieces surrounding a large imperial-style ornament.

The simple wooden tables have been replaced with marble-topped tables, supported by gilded eagles, on which are placed bronze busts of Martin Luther King Jr and Winston Churchill.

Even the iconic Resolute table – a gift from Queen Victoria, crafted from the timbers of a 19th-century Arctic exploration ship – was sent for restoration.

A makeshift table is now in use, next to a sign that reads “Gulf of America,” Trump’s rebranding of the Gulf of Mexico. Gold goblets line the windows and walls, adding to the room’s opulence.

Mr Trump’s White House renovations are far from over. The decorations are still being added. A gold replica of the FIFA World Cup trophy – a nod to Mr Trump’s interest in the 2026 tournament, which is set to be hosted in North America – now sits on a table behind his desk.

The redecoration efforts aren’t limited to the Oval Office. Mr. Trump has considered plans to renovate the Rose Garden, with plans to pave the entire lawn area to create an outdoor seating area similar to his South Florida estate.

On the South Lawn, Mr. Trump hopes to build a new ballroom for state banquets, inspired by the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles, a design he adopted at Mar-a-Lago. He has reviewed several designs, eagerly showing them off to visitors. He has also pledged to pay for the project himself.
