The Bangkok Post reported that Mr. Thaksin expressed his wishes on Twitter on May 9. Specifically, he wrote: "I am applying for permission again. I want to go home before my birthday in July to visit my grandchildren. It has been almost 17 years since I had to leave my family. I am old now."
Former Prime Minister Thaksin, who turns 74 on July 26, said all seven of his grandchildren were born after he left the country. He was ousted in a military coup in 2006 and left Thailand in 2008 to avoid jail.
In addition, in a post on May 9, he emphasized that he would not become a burden to the Pheu Thai Party. Instead, he said he would follow legal procedures. "On the day I return, the caretaker government of General Prayuth Chan-ocha will still be working. It is entirely my decision with love and attachment to my family and my country...".

This is the second time this month that former Prime Minister Thaksin has sent a message about wanting to return to Thailand.
Previously, on May 1, he posted about Paetongtarn "Ung Ing" Shinawatra's daughter giving birth to a child, who is also Mr. Thaksin's 7th grandchild.
Mr. Thaksin's new move comes as Thailand prepares for an important election, in which his daughter is one of three representatives of the Pheu Thai Party running for prime minister. And this party is also leading in pre-election polls.
More than 2 million Thai voters went to the polls early on May 7. This is the only early voting day before the main election day on May 14, according to Reuters.
