According to expert Phan Anh Tu, the team needs more friendly matches for coach Philippe Troussier to see the problems and improve the playing style and personnel.

After more than five years of success under coach Park Hang-seo, the Vietnamese team has just turned a new page under coach Troussier with a friendly win over Hong Kong 1-0 on June 15. According to Mr. Tu, the victory thanks to Que Ngoc Hai's goal from the 11m mark was not convincing, but that does not mean the team should be viewed negatively.
"The team has just practiced with a new coach for a week, so it's hard to avoid being unskilled," the expert told VnExpress on the morning of June 16. "It's too early to criticize the Vietnamese team at this time."
According to Mr. Tu, with his extensive experience, Coach Troussier will not be too shaken by the team's performance against Hong Kong. Instead, the French coach will recognize the problems and from there plan to better perfect the philosophy and ball control style of play that he pursues with the team. "Troussier is not naive enough to be too happy after winning a friendly match," Mr. Tu said.

Expert Phan Anh Tu also said that the process of developing the team under a new coach is divided into many stages, and the team is in the first stages of getting acquainted with coach Troussier. Friendly matches are an opportunity for the coach to test and select the best players, and at the same time correct mistakes.
The presence of three stars returning from playing abroad - Nguyen Van Toan, Nguyen Cong Phuong and Nguyen Quang Hai - was a detail of interest in the first team meeting under coach Troussier. But against Hong Kong yesterday, Van Toan and Cong Phuong were not registered, while Quang Hai played the entire match. "Hai is an important player but has not played much recently. The more he plays, the more suggestions he gives Mr. Troussier about Hai's most suitable position, who to pair him with, whether Hai plays in the center or on the wing more conveniently," said Mr. Tu.
Meanwhile, former Vietnam national team midfielder Nguyen Manh Dung was not satisfied with the determination and passion of the players in the first match under coach Troussier . Hong Kong is not a strong opponent, but the team's performance caused many spectators at Lach Tray Stadium to leave early, which is something coach Troussier needs to consider. "In the starting lineup, I think only Dang Van Lam played well," said Mr. Dung. "Coach Troussier should give more opportunities to players who rarely play for the national team to create new vitality for the team."
Fans left early because the Vietnamese team "played boringly".
Yesterday, Van Lam and the crossbar saved three goals for Vietnam after mistakes by Duy Manh and Que Ngoc Hai. According to Mr. Dung, this is the result of the defensive positions making many mistakes since the AFF Cup 2022, and therefore, Coach Troussier needs to boldly change personnel. "In my opinion, there are many players who no longer have the desire or desire to perform after achieving achievements in recent years. We need to eliminate all of these people to make room for the U22 players," Mr. Dung said, adding that Coach Troussier's initial belief that Nguyen Quang Hai was not worthy of being called up to the national team, but was placed in the starting lineup, was inconsistent.
Regarding the team's new playing style, Mr. Dung said that change is necessary, in line with the trend of modern football, but it also requires a new generation of players.
Vietnam has another friendly match on June 20, against an equally strong opponent Syria at Thien Truong Stadium, Nam Dinh. The results of the two friendly matches will have an impact on the position of the Vietnamese team in the FIFA rankings in June 2023 - the basis for classifying seeds for the draw of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in Asia.
