On October 31, Iraqi lawmakers elected Mahmoud al-Mashhadani as the new Speaker of Parliament, after the position had been vacant for nearly a year due to political disagreements.

The Iraqi parliament said Mahmoud al-Mashhadani was elected as the new speaker of parliament after two rounds of direct voting.
In the second round of voting, Mr. Mahmoud al-Mashhadani won 182 votes, compared to 42 votes for his opponent Salem al-Issawi. Mr. Mahmoud al-Mashhadani, 76 years old, was previously the Speaker of the Iraqi Parliament from 2006-2008.
On November 14, 2023, the Iraqi Federal Court ruled to terminate the term of Parliament Speaker Mohammed al-Halbousi for violating the law.
Iraq is a country with many different ethnic and religious groups, so Baghdad has had to establish power-sharing arrangements to govern the country. According to state office practice, the position of President is held by a Kurd, the Prime Minister is held by a Shiite, while the Speaker of Parliament is usually a Sunni.
