Mr Johnson insisted that the US Congress “will not abandon” Ukraine. However, he said that Republicans in the US House of Representatives would first introduce a separate bill to provide $14.5 billion in aid to Israel, as they needed more information about the administration’s aid strategy for Ukraine.

“We must stand with our vital ally in the Middle East and that is Israel,” Mr Johnson said in a speech.

Mr Biden met with Mr Johnson and Mr Jeffries before House leaders joined other congressional lawmakers for a confidential briefing on the relief package, according to a White House official.

The new Republican leader had a busy first day in office, with the House of Representatives convening with a flurry of activity, making up for lost time in the chaotic weeks since McCarthy was dismissed nearly a month ago.

Mr Johnson is expected to face a number of issues that have been weighing on many MPs, including aid to Israel and Ukraine, as well as passing a budget for next year.

Hakeem Jeffries said Democrats are “heartbroken” by the latest shooting and stand with Maine people in every way possible, including discussing how Congress can address gun violence.
