High-tech shrimp farming (UDCNC) brings high economic efficiency, so traditional farming methods are gradually narrowing. Thereby, the area of UDCNC shrimp farming has been increased over the years, showing that the target of 4,000 hectares of UDCNC shrimp farming will be achieved sooner than the Resolution of the Ben Tre Provincial Party Congress set out at the end of 2025.
A high-tech shrimp farming model in Ben Tre |
Increase economic efficiency
Mr. Nguyen Minh Canh, Vice Chairman of Ben Tre Provincial People's Committee, said: "The province's aquaculture industry has developed quite well in recent years, especially in the field of brackish water shrimp farming. In 2022, the aquaculture area reached over 47,590 hectares, with an output of over 310,015 tons. Of which, the area of intensive and semi-intensive brackish water shrimp farming in rotation reached over 12,500 hectares, with an output of brackish water shrimp farming reaching over 83,100 tons.
According to Mr. Canh, organizations and individuals engaged in intensive brackish water shrimp farming have gradually applied many scientific and technical advances to production; many models and forms of production following UDCNC to improve productivity, quality, reduce costs, etc. have been formed and developed. Infrastructure serving aquaculture activities has always received investment attention from the province, basically meeting the development requirements of the aquaculture industry.
According to the Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Ben Tre province, Doan Van Danh, one of the milestones marking the development of brackish water shrimp farming is the rapid conversion from traditional intensive and semi-intensive farming to UDCNC shrimp farming in the three districts of Ba Tri, Binh Dai and Thanh Phu. From the initial area of 550 hectares in 2018, by the end of 2022, the whole province will reach 2,567 hectares, with an average yield of 60-70 tons/ha, an average profit of 700-800 million VND/crop, bringing high economic efficiency to the people.
“The advantages of the UDCNC shrimp farming model are closed investment, isolation of the disease environment in the early stages, high-density farming, good management of food and environment, increased survival rate, raising shrimp to large sizes, creating conditions to increase productivity per unit area and especially convenient for waste treatment during the farming season,” Mr. Danh assessed.
Link to expand farming area
According to Vice Chairman of Ben Tre Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Minh Canh, in order to expand the farming area in natural conditions, with limited land, to meet the growth requirements according to the province's plan, it is necessary to invest in science and technology to increase productivity and improve product quality. Shrimp farming development must follow a plan, planning, and the scale of development must be concentrated to meet the requirements of stable and sustainable growth.
To do this, Mr. Le Van Quang, General Director of Minh Phu Seafood Corporation, said: “Shrimp farming must have its own water supply and drainage system to be successful. Small-scale farming households cannot do this because of the high investment costs, so it is necessary to cooperate and invest in creating large farming areas to be able to do so. This is the key to success in shrimp farming. The goal is to plan large shrimp areas to invest in separate water supply and drainage systems and invest in low-cost infrastructure. When the investment costs are low, the economic efficiency will be high.”
Secretary of the District Party Committee, Chairman of the People's Committee of Binh Dai District (Ben Tre Province) Nguyen Van Dung said that the locality is very active in calling for investors and implementing investment in technical infrastructure for UDCNC marine shrimp farming areas in the communes of Thanh Tri, Dai Hoa Loc, Thanh Phuoc, Thoi Thuan, Binh Thang. In particular, building a UDCNC shrimp farming model in Thanh Phuoc commune with a scale of 100 hectares to replicate throughout the district. Building a marine shrimp farming chain associated with traceability and achieving VietGAP certification or certification according to market requirements. These are the first steps to promote and create sustainability for shrimp in the following years, meeting market requirements.
According to the annual roadmap, Binh Dai will strive to develop 2,000 hectares of UDCNC shrimp farming by 2025; promote the development of production forms in the direction of cooperatives and cooperatives to link small-scale production facilities to create large-scale concentrated raw material areas, link input and product consumption enterprises...
According to Ben Tre Provincial Party Secretary Le Duc Tho, for the development of brackish water shrimp farming in the direction of UDCNC, the Government has had an incentive credit policy in Decree No. 55/ND-CP on credit policy for agricultural and rural development. Based on exploiting the potential and strengths of the province, Ben Tre Provincial Party Committee identified aquaculture as one of the two key economic sectors. In which, black tiger shrimp and white-leg shrimp are priority aquatic products for development.
Most recently, Resolution No. 09-NQ/DH of the Provincial Party Congress for the 2020-2025 period selected the development of 4,000 hectares of brackish water shrimp farming in Ben Tre province by 2025 as one of 11 key projects to celebrate the congress.
Secretary of Ben Tre Provincial Party Committee Le Duc Tho requested relevant sectors to pay attention to planning and implementation, including planning for concentrated UDCNC shrimp farming areas integrated into land use planning of the province and district. Research, select, improve and replicate effective models, suitable for farming conditions but must ensure good environmental protection, disease safety, food hygiene and safety; call for investment in disease-free shrimp seed production facilities, invest in infrastructure serving aquaculture development, especially pay attention to investing in concentrated UDCNC shrimp farming planning areas, as a basis for calling for investment from businesses and for people to have effective production directions.
