Mr. Than Xuan Dong (right), Vice Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Chau Duc district, Ba Ria-Vung Tau province, visited the stingless bee farm of Mr. Truong Nhat Truong.

Raising stingless bees, easy to do, high profit

The stingless bee farm of Mr. Truong Nhat Truong's family in Tien Thanh hamlet, Quang Thanh commune (Chau Duc district, Ba Ria-Vung Tau province) has an area of about 100 square meters. From 2023 to now, this bee farm has brought Mr. Truong's family an income of more than 250 million VND from selling beekeeping boxes and honey.

Sharing about the stingless bee farming model, Mr. Truong said that he has been passionate about learning about bees for a long time. Through research, Mr. Truong knows that stingless bees are smaller than honey bees, especially do not have stingers, do not leave their nests to go elsewhere, and do not take up much space. Realizing that this is a different type of bee from the honey bees that are commonly sold on the market, and have the potential to develop into a commercial product, Mr. Truong decided to devote all his efforts to raising stingless bees, a type of wild bee that grows and produces honey on its own.

Working by himself and combining research with reference materials from books, newspapers, and the internet, after many experiments to grasp the growth process of stingless bees, Mr. Truong proceeded to multiply the colonies in his house and around his garden. From more than a dozen initial bee colonies, after 7 years of raising, Mr. Truong has developed more than 600 stingless bee colonies and established the "Bee Farm School".

According to Mr. Truong, a stingless bee colony produces honey twice a year, about 1 liter of honey. The characteristic of this stingless bee species is that it does not eat sugar but only sucks flower nectar, so the honey is natural and pure.

Du honey is sweet, clear and slightly sour, and has a higher nutritional content than other types of honey, so many people seek it out. Du honey sold in the garden is 2 million VND/liter; each box of bee seeds sells for 1.5 - 2 million VND.

Regarding stingless bee honey, Mr. Truong has two products: honey and stingless bee extract. Currently, Mr. Truong is focusing on promoting the exploitation of the breed, so the honey collection to date has reached about 150 liters.

According to Mr. Truong's experience, raising stingless bees indoors requires creating a cool space with stable temperature, while raising them outdoors, under tree canopies, requires attention to protecting the beehive from lizards and birds that are looking to catch and eat them.

Raising stingless bees is very easy and safe for the beekeeper. Honey bees will leave the hive, but this phenomenon does not occur with stingless bees because after laying eggs, the queen stingless bee stays in one place and does not fly.

Raising giant pandas combined with tourism

With an area of over 1,500m2, Win's Farm was invested by Ms. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Phuong, in Lien Hiep hamlet, Xa Bang commune, in a stingless bee farming model combined with schools to organize tours to learn about bees. Thereby, creating a connection between students and nature to educate on environmental protection and preserve natural landscapes.

Here, more than 200 wooden boxes for raising stingless bees were designed by Ms. Phuong with many unique styles. Sharing about wooden boxes for raising stingless bees, Ms. Phuong said that households in the area mainly raise stingless bees for honey, while at Win's Farm, the wooden boxes are decorated eye-catchingly to both raise honey and serve as decoration to highlight outdoor spaces.

“These boxes are considered houses for beekeeping, ensuring that the colony can be separated or honey can be collected without affecting the development of the colony. Each box of stingless bees takes nearly a year to harvest, yielding about 500ml of honey. This is also a startup project in 2024 that I have registered for,” Ms. Phuong added.

According to the District Farmers' Association, Chau Duc has an agricultural land area of over 34,500 hectares, accounting for over 81% of the district's natural land area. Many specialized fruit growing areas have been formed, suitable for the stingless bee farming model.

“The Association will advise the District People's Committee to support the development of OCOP products; support preferential loans; propagate and mobilize 15 stingless bee farming households in the district to establish a Professional Farmers' Association to help each other with techniques, improve quality, create brands and stabilize output for stingless bee products,” said Mr. Than Xuan Dong, Vice Chairman of the Chau Duc District Farmers' Association (Ba Ria-Vung Tau province).
