In recent times, many farming households in the Mekong Delta have raised wild boars on a household or semi-wild scale, bringing quite high economic efficiency. Drawing from the above models, the first wild boar farm in Van Giao commune, Tinh Bien district, An Giang province was formed, developed well and achieved high economic efficiency.

Trung Hieu wild boar farm in Day Ca Hom hamlet, Van Giao commune, Tinh Bien district, is considered the first large-scale wild boar farming model in An Giang.

With a well-invested barn system and good pig breeding techniques, the wild boar farm has expanded day by day. Mr. Bui Tuan Anh, Manager of Trung Hieu wild boar farm, said: “We have invested in the farm for about 4 years now.

Initially, only 4 female pigs and 2 male pigs were purchased from Dong Nai for a total cost of about 30 million VND.

Thanks to consulting technical books and learning from the experiences of wild boar farms in Dong Nai, raising wild boars is not too difficult. Raising wild boars requires a large space to ensure enough space for the pigs to move and especially to create a cool atmosphere for the barn.

The pig farm system was invested in quite systematically by Mr. Bui Anh Tuan, Day Ca Hom Hamlet, Van Giao Commune, Tinh Bien District (An Giang Province) to help the pig farm develop well.

The pig farm system at Trung Hieu is invested in the right technique. Each barn is separated by a fence system and iron doors, with an average area of about 12m2 or more for a herd of pigs.

The barn has two parts, the covered barn, cement yard for the pigs to rest, avoid the sun, rain and sleep at night. The sand yard has a shallow water tank for the pigs to live and move around. The roof of the farm also has a ventilation fan system to help keep the air in the barn always airy, avoiding local heat.

“Raising wild boars on an industrial scale, the farm form is different from the semi-wild pig farming model, so attention must be paid to building pig pens.

Wild boars are wild animals, so the pen must have a yard for the pigs to move around and a water source for the pigs to wallow in. Only then will the pigs be healthy, less prone to disease, grow quickly, and have firm meat like pigs raised in semi-wild areas," Tuan Anh shared.

With the initial 4 sows, after only a few months, Mr. Tuan Anh's herd of pigs began to give birth to the first litter of about 6-8 pigs/birth, from the second litter onwards about 10 pigs/birth. The reproductive cycle of wild boars is about 2 years for 5 litters.

“Breeding wild boars, like other four-legged animals, is quite easy. It is mainly natural breeding. The main characteristic is that wild boars still have high wild instincts, so the less human impact, the better,” Mr. Tuan Anh shared his experience.

After natural mating, the mother pig needs to be fed more regularly, and can be supplemented with bran, fruit... especially near birth and during the first month of breastfeeding. After about a month and a half, the piglets are strong and can find their own food, then the mother pig can continue to be mated for the next litter.

Currently, Trung Hieu pig farm has 18 pens with 18 sows in the reproductive cycle. The number of piglets from a few days old to over two months old is around 100. Wild boars often suffer from diseases such as septicemia, typhoid, cholera... so it is not difficult to prevent them by vaccinating piglets.

Wild boars mainly eat vegetables, leaves, grass..., so the current food source is mainly purchased or from waste vegetables from vegetable sellers in the markets at quite cheap prices. According to Mr. Tuan Anh's calculation, for a pig from birth to reaching the weight of a live pig, that is, over 12kg, it is about 1 million VND/pig.

The price of wild boar in An Giang is currently around 150,000 VND/kg (live pig), and breeding pigs are around 250,000 VND/kg. In 2010, the pig farm managed by Mr. Tuan Anh earned over 150 million VND from breeding pigs alone.

Mr. Tuan Anh said: “Because the number of wild boar farms in An Giang is not large while the market demand is large, the output is very good. Currently, the farm almost does not have enough pigs to sell to the market. Since the beginning of the year, the farm has mainly sold breeding pigs.”

Regarding the next direction for the farm, Mr. Tuan Anh said: "The farm area is still quite large, we will continue to expand the farm scale depending on market conditions and demand, but will focus on selling to restaurants and eateries.

In addition, we will continue to invest in planting fruit orchards and aim to build a wild boar farm model combined with eco-tourism to attract visitors to the Lady's festival and Cam mountain tourism...
