Not only did she get a high SAT score, Do Thi Van Ha, a former student of Nguyen Trai High School for the Gifted (Hai Duong), also impressed everyone with her IELTS score of 8.5.
Family is the greatest source of encouragement
Born into a family with two brothers and old parents, Van Ha is always self-motivated in studying.
Sharing about her family, Van Ha said with pride: “My father is a self-employed businessman and my mother is a primary school teacher. Both my parents always wanted me to pursue an academic career, so when they heard that I became valedictorian and achieved many achievements, my parents were somewhat reassured. The biggest motivation for me to “study day and work night” up to now is my family.”
Having been admitted early to many universities, Van Ha said she decided to choose the National Economics University because the school has good teaching quality, modern facilities, and a favorable environment for students to develop both knowledge and social skills.
The new valedictorian chose Business Analysis because the major focuses on analytical and consulting skills, and has prospects in the coming years.
"The nature of the major requires students to be sharp in skills and thinking, and have good foreign language skills. I feel that I have the ability to study well, so I registered to study. Moreover, this is also one of the top majors and has high job opportunities," said Van Ha.
After two weeks of studying, the female student experienced 4 subjects including: Communication and presentation skills, Essay writing, Microeconomics, Marxist-Leninist philosophy. For each subject, the new student built a different learning method to bring the best results.
Van Ha gave an example: "For Macroeconomics, I try to apply the initial theories I learned to explain events and phenomena around me, thanks to which I can grasp the lesson better."
Although she has only been in Hanoi for 2 weeks, Van Ha cannot help but feel homesick. After each class, the female student said she often takes time to call home to tell her parents about her day of studying and living at her new school.
Secrets to Studying for the SAT in 2 Weeks
Realizing that she learned slower than some of her classmates, Van Ha made a practice plan according to her ability, without comparing or forcing herself to follow the speed of others.
“At the end of 12th grade, I only did well in English, and my scores in the other subjects were only average, so it was very difficult for me to pass the entrance exam to the National Economics University through the graduation exam. However, I did not put pressure on myself, instead I researched and decided to take the SAT because I saw a high chance of passing,” Van Ha recalled.
Time was pressing, Van Ha only had two weeks to review for the exam. The new valedictorian and her friend signed up for a short online course to catch up with the exam schedule. At the same time, she focused all her time reviewing each specific section, mastering the knowledge of each section after completing it.
Regarding the reading and writing part of the SAT test, the female student said that this is the most difficult part because to do well, candidates need to have very fluent reading and writing skills.
“Instead of reading the passage immediately upon receiving the assignment, I reviewed and read the questions first, then chose the questions I could answer immediately to do first, then continued reading the entire passage and doing the remaining questions. In addition, in the writing section, there are often quite difficult graph questions, and my secret to doing them is to learn a lot of vocabulary,” the new valedictorian said.
As for the Math section of the SAT, the female student found it "easier" because she had a lot of basic knowledge and could do it if she read the questions carefully.
Van Ha shared: “The Math questions are quite easy, however, there are many questions in the test that the test maker likes to trick. While doing the test, I always read carefully to see what the question is asking about and always check all the answers I have chosen.”
Thanks to that, the female student achieved 1590/1600 SAT points (Math 800/800, Reading 790), becoming the valedictorian of the Business Analysis major.
In addition to her near-perfect SAT score, Van Ha also has admirable academic achievements with the following titles: Silver Medal in the Excellent Student Competition of Specialized High Schools in the Coastal and Northern Delta regions, Third Prize in the National Excellent Student Competition in English,... In addition, she also has an IELTS certificate with a score of 8.5.
Closing her 12-year high school journey, the female student from Hai Duong feels that she has no regrets because in addition to studying, she also participates in many extracurricular activities, always giving her all for her friends and the community.
Having been with her student for 3 years, Ms. Pham Thi Dieu Thu, English teacher and Van Ha's homeroom teacher since grade 10, said that the female valedictorian's achievement is the greatest encouragement for the entire school as well as her family.
“I see that she is very hard-working, careful and self-disciplined, with a very clear study plan. In English, she is not afraid to help weaker students and always looks for additional materials, completing her assignments excellently,” said Ms. Thu.
Putting great faith in the new valedictorian, Ms. Thu hopes that in the future the female valedictorian will continue to reap many successes and become a good businesswoman.
Sharing about her future plans, Van Ha said she will continue to study and improve her foreign language skills. At the same time, she will also spend time participating in clubs to improve her soft skills, preparing a solid foundation for the next journey.
