Ngo Thi Hang, from Thanh Hoa, is this year’s valedictorian of the University of Transport. During her four years of study, the Thanh girl won 14 scholarships, many of which came from businesses. Despite achieving such a dream result, the female student said she had to struggle to find her own path.

Last minute change

During high school, Ngo Thi Hang set a goal of passing the entrance exam to Hanoi Medical University, but this desire of Hang was discouraged by everyone in her family. Even Hang's cousin - who was a medical student - tried to persuade her not to pursue this major because the study time was long and it was even more difficult for a girl.

During the wavering period, Hang happened to watch a fundraising show on Shark Tank of a startup related to the Logistics field. Impressed and curious, Hang tried to find out.

The first thoughts about the industry that the female student collected were mainly related to logistics, transportation and import-export. This is also a field that requires the use of English and requires communication skills. Feeling suitable, Hang decided to switch from block B00 (Math, Chemistry, Biology) to block D07 (Math, Chemistry, English) when the university entrance exam was approaching.

In 2019, Hang took the exam and was admitted to the Logistics Management major at the University of Transport. In the first days of school, the Thanh Hoa female student had to get used to the fact that each class teacher usually taught a chapter about 20-30 pages long. Although it was a bit shocking, Hang still kept the same habit as when she was in high school, focusing on listening to lectures right in class. Thanks to that, she remembered the knowledge deeply, and Hang did not have to struggle to study from the beginning before each final exam.

Only focusing on studying and tutoring, in the first semester, the female student from Thanh became the only student in the entire course to achieve a GPA of 4.0/4.0.

However, Hang admitted that to achieve that result, she had to make many sacrifices. There was a period before the exam when she only focused on studying and often slept very little. At the peak in the first semester of year 2, Hang dropped from 52kg to 46kg.

“At that time, because I didn't know how to study effectively and allocate time properly, it took me a lot of time to memorize knowledge.”

Struggling to find a method, Hang realized that at this level of education, self-study is very important, but it is also necessary to have friends to support each other to progress. Therefore, in the second semester of year 2, in addition to self-study hours, the female student often studied with her close friends.

“Before each exam, we often gather together to review the topic. With difficult problems, the whole group will find ways to solve each obstacle. Teaching each other is also very effective, helping the whole group understand the problem more deeply,” Hang said.

“I still feel very small”

Continuously receiving the school's encouragement scholarship, but when seeing her seniors winning the title of Central-level 5-Good Student, Hang realized that just getting high scores was not enough.

At the end of her second year, Hang started joining the school’s Logistics Club and signed up for several competitions to gain experience. These experiences made her regret “I wish I had joined sooner”.

Hang was honored by Hanoi as the valedictorian of the year 2023.

The Thanh girl won the Vietnam Logistics Young Talents contest. This premise made Hang excited and continued to "fight" in a number of other contests related to the field of startups. In her 4th year, Hang was one of 200 students nationwide and the only student of the school to win a scholarship from the Deloitte Group.

Over the past 4 years, the total number of scholarships Hang has won through competitions has reached hundreds of millions of VND. However, according to Hang, the most valuable thing she has received through the competitions is the opportunity to meet and talk with seniors in businesses and talented peers.

“I feel small and everyone is so talented. Thanks to that, I have also been enlightened and inspired by many things. Like when I attended a live training session of Deloitte, I was shared about the need to look at problems with many different eyes, not too negative but also not too rosy. Those perspectives and sharing are very different from what I thought before,” Hang shared.

Although she has a good chance of winning scholarships and awards, Hang was once disappointed when she failed to get a scholarship from a large company. Wondering where she did not do well, Hang proactively sent an email to the interviewer to ask why she did not pass. Afterwards, the female student received feedback that she was not self-controlled and was too confident. That was also a lesson that Hang deeply remembered.

Vu Thi Hoa, a second-year student and member of the Logistics Club of the University of Transport, was impressed by Hang, who had achieved many achievements and awards in her four years of study. “Hang has inspired us so much that people often tease us that we need to “cast a statue” of her. We always admire her and look up to her as an example to learn from,” Hoa shared.

After graduating, Ngo Thi Hang focused on learning Chinese with the goal of studying abroad in China. Hang believes that China is the “logistics center of the world”, so this will be a favorable environment for female students to develop their expertise. In addition, Hang is also challenging herself in some new fields. Hang is currently a KOL in the book segment with a Tiktok channel of nearly 20,000 followers.

Looking back on the journey, Hang is grateful for her parents' efforts to invest in her.

“In the past, my family was always on the list of poor and near-poor. When I went to school, I always received support. However, my parents always valued and ensured my education. My family is the biggest motivation for me to always strive to study hard,” Hang said.
