Famous singer Hoang Oanh (real name Huynh Kim Chi) was born in 1946 in My Tho but grew up in Saigon. She was taught to sing by her father when she was only 5 years old. At the age of 8, she performed for the first time on stage at the Thu Duc Military Academy with two songs "Huong lua mien Nam" and "Co mot dan chim".

The stage name Hoang Oanh was given to her by her father in 1958 when she joined the children's band of musician Le Do. He used the lyrics "Waiting for the letter from the oriole/ Still flying far away in the misty fog" in the song "Spring Melody" by musician Le Thuong to give her the stage name.

In her heyday, famous singer Hoang Oanh dominated almost all radio and television channels. She was the singer who was invited to record the most, with more than 200 albums up to 1975, on many different record labels.

What is special is that in her career, Hoang Oanh did not perform at dance halls and tea rooms, although at that time most artists did this. She once explained this as follows: "When I was young, Oanh lived with a very strict uncle, so he did not let me sing at tea rooms or dance halls, only occasionally letting me sing at big concerts." Although she became famous early, she still graduated from Saigon University of Literature with a Bachelor of Arts degree, then devoted her entire career to music.

Musician Nguyen Anh 9 once compared Hoang Oanh to Che Linh to describe the beauty in her personality. He said: "Hoang Oanh is truly a loyal person, meaning she thinks of herself and of others. Another important factor is that once she releases her tapes, records, and CDs, she keeps them and preserves them carefully as if they were her brainchildren.

Meanwhile, singer Che Linh is different. He forgets all the tapes he has released and all the songs he has sung, just like selling his voice and lyrics for commercial purposes when a music center invites him to do so.
