In 2024, the Hanoi Agricultural Extension Center will build a demonstration model of new potato varieties with high yield and quality that adapt to climate change in the winter crop. The model has a scale of 85 hectares, implemented on 2 new potato varieties, Julinka and Atlantic (including 55 hectares of Julinka for fresh consumption; 30 hectares of Atlantic for processing, deployed at 4 locations in 4 districts: Me Linh, Soc Son, Ung Hoa and My Duc.
Accordingly, households participating in the model are supported by the Hanoi Agricultural Extension Center with 50% of seeds, 50% of materials and fertilizers. Under the inspection and supervision of the District Agricultural Service Centers and the Department of Agricultural Extension (Hanoi Agricultural Extension Center). All types of materials and fertilizers supported and matched are guaranteed to be sufficient in quantity, meet quality standards and on time, ensuring timely harvest.
Up to now, the potato model sites are growing well and are in the tuber development stage. Expected harvest time: for Julinka planting sites, the growing period is 85 - 90 days, and will be harvested in mid-January 2025 (before Lunar New Year 2025); for Alantic planting sites, the growing period is 95 - 100 days, and will be harvested from late January to early February 2025 (before and after Lunar New Year 2025).
Evaluation shows that both Atlantic and Julinka potato varieties have high productivity and economic efficiency. It is expected that Atlantic variety will yield 22.7 tons/ha, grade 1 tubers will reach 85%, economic efficiency will reach 81.5 million VND/ha; Julinka variety is expected to yield 23.3 tons/ha, grade 1 tubers will reach 71.4%, economic efficiency will reach 82.6 million VND/ha. This level of economic efficiency is much higher than that of corn and soybeans grown in the winter crop.
Deputy Director of Hanoi Agricultural Extension Center Doan Duc Dan said: The two potato varieties Atlantic and Julinka have many advantages such as uniform, smooth, shallow-eyed tubers, and a high percentage of grade 1 tubers. Of which, the Julinka variety has yellow skin and flesh, high starch content, suitable for fresh consumers; the Atlantic variety has round tubers, white skin and flesh, high dry matter content, suitable for the processing industry, so it is very easy to commercialize.
On the other hand, growing potatoes in the winter season is not subject to seasonal pressure, making the most of the straw after harvest as fertilizer to supplement organic matter for the soil, creating looseness for potato growth; along with the stems and leaves of the potatoes after harvest, the tubers will become organic fertilizer, adding nutrients to the soil for growing rice in the spring season.
Appreciating the effectiveness of the model, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Manh Phuong commented: the "plus point" of the model is that there are enterprises signing contracts to purchase products right from the beginning of the season. Specifically, the Atlantic variety grown at Tu Lap commune (Me Linh district) has been signed by enterprises to purchase all products at a price of 6,000 - 8,600 VND/kg. With this production and consumption linkage, farmers can feel secure in production, without worrying about "good harvest, low price".
This is also one of the important bases for the Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to consider and add Atlantic and Julinka potato varieties to the city's potato variety structure and continue to support model building in the following years.
For agricultural production localities in the city, Mr. Nguyen Manh Phuong suggested that districts, communes, and cooperatives need to strengthen propaganda work about these new potato varieties.
In addition to the city’s policies, districts need to have their own mechanisms to support and encourage cooperatives and farmers to expand the area of Atlantic and Julinka potato varieties. From there, gradually expand and effectively exploit the area of winter crops, bringing many practical benefits to farmers and developing the local economy.
