At court, Ms. Truong My Lan said that the life sentence proposed by the prosecutor was too harsh. Ms. Lan said that she always tried to find ways to compensate all bondholders for damages. According to Ms. Lan, the money collected from issuing SCB bonds could not be used much because it had to be used to pay for many other expenses. Ms. Lan said that she did not appropriate the victims' assets, "the incident happened as if it was fate, an accident" - Ms. Lan said. Ms. Lan cried and asked the jury to consider reducing the sentence for her and 33 accomplices in the case so that they could soon return to their families and start a new life. In her final words, Ms. Lan said that everyone makes mistakes and has to pay the price, but the price she had to pay was too high. "In my life, I have three big dreams: building an international general hospital, building social housing, and building a free school. I spent decades trying to do it, but failed at the last minute. I am not a bad person. My heart is bleeding every second. I am just a lowly citizen. I ask the jury to consider giving me leniency under the law," Lan cried as she spoke her final words. Then, Truong My Lan apologized to the victims and said she accepted her fate, because the name Truong My Lan had affected hundreds of families and tens of thousands of people. In her final words, Ms. Lan thanked the leaders of the State Bank and SCB Bank for providing data to the investigation agency to clarify the nature of the case over the past time. In addition, Ms. Lan asked the jury to consider her contributions to society and efforts to remedy the consequences of the case, and asked the jury to reduce the sentence for her husband, sister-in-law, nephew, and all remaining accomplices. The jury deliberated and will announce the verdict on October 17.
