A witness named Nico said chaos ensued after the shooting, with people running in different directions. "A few shots were heard in a short period of time, followed by screaming, then another round of shots, probably 15-16 shots," Nico said. Some people living near the scene of the shooting said they heard 20-25 shots.
Ottawa police said there was no indication the shooting was motivated by hate crimes “related to race or religion,” but did not rule out the possibility. Chief Stubbs said the possibility of gang-related activity would be closely examined.
Gun violence has increased in some Canadian cities in recent years. Compared to 2009, the number of gun-related crimes in this country increased by 81%.
