Nearly 30 majors have a benchmark score based on high school graduation exam results of 28 or higher, notably Computer Science, History Pedagogy, Communications, Economics and Law.
As of August 24, about 160 universities announced admission scores based on high school graduation exam results. Hanoi University of Science and Technology's Computer Science program had an admission score of 29.42, taking the top spot in admission scores for Korean Studies and Public Relations in the past two years.
The score for this major is calculated according to the formula: [(Subject 1 + Subject 2 + Subject 3 + Main subject) x 3/4] + Priority points. The main subject is Math.
Due to very high scores and calculated according to a special formula, the two top students of block A00 (Math, Physics, Chemistry) failed their first choice to enter Hanoi University of Science and Technology.
In addition to Computer Science, this university has 4 other majors with a benchmark score of over 28, including Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, Computer Engineering, Global ICT, Cyber Security (Advanced Program). Of which, Data Science and Artificial Intelligence has the second highest input in the country with 28.8 points.
Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Phong Dien, Vice President of Hanoi University of Science and Technology, said that the school's Information Technology major is always "hot" but the quota based on graduation exam scores is not much.
For example, this year the Computer Science major recruited 300 students, accounting for less than 4% of the total enrollment target of Hanoi University of Science and Technology.
"Meanwhile, the school has recruited a large number of students into this major through other methods such as talent selection or based on thinking assessment exams. This pushes the benchmark based on graduation exam scores to over 29," said Mr. Dien.
Last year, Hanoi University of Science and Technology did not consider admission to this major based on high school graduation exam results.

Third in terms of benchmark scores is the Public Relations major of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi with 28.78 points in group C00 (Literature, History, Geography).
Last year, this major, along with Oriental Studies and Korean Studies, led with 29.95 points. This year, these majors are still in the group with the highest input in the C00 group, but have decreased compared to last year, partly due to a slight decrease in the score of this group.
History Education attracted attention when there were 4 schools with a benchmark score of 28 or higher, of which Hanoi Pedagogical University 2 had the highest with 28.58 points. The strongest change in this group was the History Education major of Vinh University, increasing from 25.75 to 28.12.
Below is a list of majors with a benchmark score of 28 or higher. No majors in the Medical or Pharmaceutical sectors are on this list.

By region, only two majors with scores of 28 or more are from southern universities, including Computer Science of the University of Natural Sciences and Journalism of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities. Both are under the Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City.
The leader of a social science school in the northern region said that the benchmark scores for each major depend on many factors, including quotas, number of registered wishes, and score distribution by combination.
For example, the Public Relations Department of the Hanoi University of Social Sciences and Humanities has 80 quotas, but is considered based on 5 methods. For the method of calculating based on graduation exam scores, the school also considers 4 combinations, including C00, D01 (Math, Literature, English), D04 (Math, Literature, Chinese) and D78 (Literature, Social Sciences, English). Or the History Pedagogy Department of the Hanoi National University of Education recruits nearly 70 students, but only has 25 quotas for the method of considering based on graduation exam scores.
"The quota is small, so schools only take a few candidates with the highest scores, leading to high benchmark scores," he said. The highest score in social science and pedagogical schools is usually in the C00 group.
This year, more than 660,000 candidates applied for university admission with 3.4 million wishes. Immediately after the end of the admission period, schools that have not yet recruited enough students will announce additional admissions. These rounds last until December.
