On October 15, the Hanoi Association for Promotion of Education and the Hanoi Association of Women Intellectuals jointly organized a seminar on "Some solutions to encourage students to overcome difficulties and study well" with the participation of scientists, managers and local authorities.
Difficulties and challenges
For students with difficult circumstances, striving to continue studying and doing well requires not only intelligence but also a lot of determination and social resources.
Dr. Nguyen Tung Lam, Vice President of the Vietnam Association of Educational Psychology, Chairman of the Education Council of Dinh Tien Hoang High School (Hanoi) analyzed and clarified the types of difficulties that students encounter and face; those are economic difficulties, health difficulties (including physical health and mental health).
According to Vice Chairwoman of Hai Ba Trung District People's Committee Nguyen Thi Thu Hien, in the current learning environment, many students face economic difficulties, family circumstances or psychological events. These difficulties can hinder their learning and development.
Discussing the difficulties of students, Dr. Ngo Thi Kim Dung, Hanoi University of Architecture, said that there are 4 typical difficulties that students often encounter. The first is financial difficulties, which are considered the biggest barrier for students, especially those from low-income families. Next is difficulty with appearance, because appearance and health are important factors that affect students' confidence and ability to integrate into the learning and social environment. In fact, the psychological impact of appearance makes many students lose motivation, do not want to communicate and tend to live in isolation.
Students with disabilities also face typical difficulties. For this group, the journey to knowledge is a challenge not only in terms of studying but also in terms of social integration and access to the school environment. In addition, students from underdeveloped and backward areas also face many difficulties and obstacles.
"In order for disadvantaged students to continue to excel in their studies, what should society, family, and teachers do to help them both materially and spiritually? This is a difficult problem in the short and long term. Only when students are mentally stable and make efforts in their studies can they be confident in establishing themselves and their careers in the future," Associate Professor, Dr. Bui Thi An, President of the Hanoi Women Intellectuals Association, raised the issue.
Create a “5-self” lifestyle
From an educational perspective, Dr. Nguyen Tung Lam offers a general solution that any student can apply and change their life: students must have a culture of self-development and a lifestyle of “5 selfs” (self-study, self-control, self-confidence, self-respect and self-responsibility).
Each of you must determine your life motivation, life goals, and always innovate to make progress today than yesterday. Along with that, you must be dedicated to your career, making your mind bright, your body healthy, and your mind at peace. To progress, you must learn, learn everywhere, every time, know how to cooperate with everyone to succeed in every job, always be aware of eliminating bad things and limitations of yourself to perfect your personality, gain everyone's trust; always link each person's career with family, friends, hometown, country, and must know how to contribute to the community.
To encourage and motivate students to overcome difficulties and excel in their studies, Vice Chairman of Ba Vi District People's Committee Nguyen Duc Anh shared: In recent times, Ba Vi District has implemented many synchronous and flexible solutions in the work of encouraging learning and talent; focusing on building a friendly and safe learning environment; actively coordinating with businesses, charitable organizations and benefactors to develop a scholarship fund specifically for students in difficult circumstances (in addition to accessing loans from the Social Policy Bank). The Lifelong Learning Movement in the community has received great attention from the District People's Committee. In particular, the District People's Committee has built the "Drum of Studying" movement, not only creating conditions and strong motivation for students to study but also spreading the spirit of learning throughout society, building a sustainable learning culture.
In addition to material support, the People's Committee of Ba Vi district also pays attention to rewarding and encouraging the spirit; educating life skills for students; and promoting the application of information technology in education.
Vice Chairwoman of Hai Ba Trung District People's Committee Nguyen Thi Thu Hien presented a number of solutions to encourage students to overcome difficulties and study well that the unit has been applying, including: establishing and maintaining scholarship funds; providing other financial support (such as giving bicycles and school supplies during the preliminary summary, gratitude and anniversary occasions), supporting students with study loans; creating a learning and training environment for students (organizing free extra classes; establishing school counseling rooms to advise and support students with psychological difficulties); timely encouragement and rewards; strengthening connections with the business community.
According to Chairwoman of the Hanoi Association for Promotion of Education Nguyen Thi Ngoc Minh, the macro and specific solutions contributed at the seminar are of great significance in policy making, contributing to helping the work of promoting education and talents achieve better results in the coming time.
