With the amendment of the decree of the Ministry of Economy , Trade and Industry of Japan under the Foreign Exchange Law, Japan has added 23 chip manufacturing items that need approval for export purposes.
Although Tokyo did not specify which countries were the main targets of the export restrictions, the move has drawn a strong backlash from China,
Beijing said it would restrict exports of gallium and germanium - two rare earth metals vital to chipmaking - from next month in retaliation for Washington's curbs on semiconductor exports.
In October 2022, the US imposed some of the most stringent export restrictions to date on chips and chipmaking equipment, requiring chipmakers to obtain licenses from the Commerce Department to sell some of their most advanced products to Chinese customers.
These measures are aimed at preventing China from using US technology to develop its military power.
The US also requires countries with advanced chip manufacturing technology, including Japan and the Netherlands, to implement similar policies.
