Superinfection after self-medication for flu
E Hospital said that the female patient is NNP (in Hanoi) and is being treated at the Department of Infectious Diseases due to a secondary flu infection.
Four days before being admitted to the hospital, Ms. N. had a high fever with headache, sore throat, cough with phlegm, runny nose, and body aches. After testing positive for the flu at home, the patient took Tamiflu for 2 days but still had a high fever and fatigue, so she went to the Department of Tropical Diseases, Hospital E (Hanoi).
Antiviral drugs used to treat influenza should only be used with a doctor's prescription.
At Hospital E, Ms. N. was diagnosed with influenza B infection and was prescribed antibiotics, anti-influenza virus, combined with supportive measures such as cough relief, fever reduction and electrolyte replacement.
According to the Department of Tropical Diseases, E Hospital, since the Lunar New Year 2025 until now, the number of flu cases coming for examination and treatment has tended to increase, averaging about 10 patients per day. At times, the number of flu infections accounted for about 50% of the nearly 40 patients coming for examination/day. From January until now, the Department of Tropical Diseases has received examination and treatment for about 250 flu cases caused by influenza A and B viruses.
According to Master Dinh Thi Bich Thuc, doctor of the Department of Tropical Diseases, Hospital E, not only the elderly, children or people with underlying diseases (cardiovascular, diabetes, respiratory), even young, healthy people are at risk of getting sick and experiencing complications if they are subjective.
Doctors warn that people at high risk of dangerous complications from seasonal flu include: pregnant women; children under 5 years old; people over 65 years old; people with chronic diseases such as HIV/AIDS, asthma, heart disease, lung disease and diabetes; people at high risk of flu exposure, including health care workers.
"Anyone is at risk of getting the flu with varying degrees of impact. When experiencing symptoms of cough, fever, runny nose, headache, fatigue, people should go to a medical facility for consultation or prescription, after having their health status assessed," Dr. Thuc noted.
To prevent seasonal flu, people should cover their mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing. It is best to cover your mouth with a disposable tissue to reduce the spread of respiratory secretions.

Regarding the use of the antiviral drug Tamiflu, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Lam, Deputy Director of the Department of Drug Administration, Ministry of Health, said that the department has sent an official dispatch to the health departments and hospitals under the Ministry of Health, requesting urgent implementation of work to ensure drug supply and control prices of flu treatment drugs, especially for drugs to treat influenza A (Tamiflu and drugs containing the active ingredient oseltamivir). This is a prescription drug, people with flu can only use it with a doctor's prescription.
The Drug Administration also requested health departments to organize inspections, checks, and strictly handle violations in the trading of antiviral drugs used to treat seasonal flu, drugs to treat influenza A, especially violations of regulations on drug price management (declaring prices incorrectly, not posting drug prices, selling at higher prices than listed prices); strictly handle cases of trading in drugs of unknown origin, selling prescription drugs without a doctor's prescription, taking advantage of the epidemic to unreasonably increase drug prices...
