Car imports and consumption decreased sharply in the first month of the year

ANTD.VN - In January 2025, the number of imported automobiles of all types registered for customs declarations decreased by 43.9% in quantity and 46.2% in value compared to the previous month.

Specifically, the import volume this month was 7,226 units, equivalent to 163 million USD. Previously, in December 2025, the General Department of Customs recorded 12,881 imported complete automobiles of all kinds with a value of 304 million USD.

In January 2025, all types of completely built-up cars registered for customs procedures imported into Vietnam mainly originated from 3 main markets: Indonesia with 2,621 units, China with 2,595 units and Thailand with 1,631 units. The total number of imported cars from these 3 markets was 6,847 units, accounting for 95% of the total number of imported cars into Vietnam in the month.

The largest proportion is still cars with 9 seats or less, with 5,698 units imported into Vietnam, with a total value of 97.7 million USD, accounting for 78.9%.

With this result, the number of cars with 9 seats or less imported to Vietnam in the month also decreased by 45.7% (equivalent to a decrease of 4,789 cars) compared to the previous month.

Car imports in the first month of the year decreased sharply due to Lunar New Year holiday

Completely built-up cars with 9 seats or less registered for import in January 2024 were mainly from Indonesia with 2,621 units; from Thailand with 1,522 units and from China with 1,216 units.

Converted at the current exchange rate, each car of this model imported to Vietnam has a declared customs price of about 440 million VND, slightly lower than last month.

In addition, Customs recorded 8 cars with more than 9 seats, 534 trucks and 986 specialized vehicles imported during the month.

Although it decreased sharply compared to the previous month due to the Lunar New Year holiday, the number of imported cars of all types in January 2025 to Vietnam increased by 7.7% compared to the same period last year. Of which, cars with 9 seats or less increased by 2.4% and trucks increased by 56.6%.

Regarding auto parts and components, preliminary statistics from the General Department of Customs show that in the month, 373 million USD worth of auto parts and components of all kinds were imported into our country by businesses. This figure decreased by 22.1% compared to the previous month but increased slightly by 9% compared to the same period last year.

Vietnamese enterprises imported this group of goods last month with very diverse origins. Six countries accounted for 94% of the import market share, including: China with 148 million USD, from Korea with 80 million USD, from Thailand with 47 million USD, from Japan with 32.8 million USD, from India with 25.1 million USD and from Indonesia with 19 million USD.

Regarding car consumption, due to the Tet holiday, consumption in the first month of the year also decreased sharply. Data from the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA) shows that in the month, 18,893 cars were sold in the whole market, 12,705 units lower, or 40% lower than in December 2024.

Of which, the passenger car segment achieved sales of 14,201 units, down 42% compared to December 2024. In addition, the number of commercial vehicles sold in the first month of the year reached 4,354 units, down 33%. Specialized vehicles decreased by 40%, reaching 338 units.

In terms of origin, the group of completely imported cars has surpassed domestically produced and assembled cars to lead the market in January 2025. Specifically, sales of completely imported cars reached 9,773 cars in the first month of the year, a slight increase of 3% over the same period last year.

Meanwhile, sales of assembled cars reached 9,120 units, down 7% over the same period last year.
