Acute pancreatitis is a sudden inflammation of the pancreas that can lead to serious complications if not detected and treated promptly.

One of the common causes of acute pancreatitis is alcohol abuse. The symptoms of acute pancreatitis caused by alcohol are quite specific, helping patients recognize and promptly seek emergency care.

Acute pancreatitis caused by alcohol often presents with pain in the epigastric region (above the navel), the pain may radiate to the flank, back or both sides. The pain can range from mild to severe, persistent and dull.

In particular, the pain often increases when the patient lies on his back or in a normal position, and the pain may decrease when lying in the fetal position. In addition to abdominal pain, the patient also has accompanying symptoms such as nausea and vomiting.

In severe cases of acute pancreatitis, patients may experience symptoms such as shock, low blood pressure, respiratory failure, difficulty breathing, and bruising around the navel, back, and hips.

Acute pancreatitis caused by alcohol usually occurs when patients drink too much alcohol, especially after eating fatty foods. Abdominal pain can last for several hours and is worse after eating, especially in people who are obese or have a history of stomach problems.

If not treated promptly, acute pancreatitis can lead to excessive immune responses, causing peritonitis, septic shock, and damage to extra-abdominal organs.

Acute pancreatitis is an emergency condition. If not treated promptly, it can cause serious complications such as respiratory failure, blood clotting disorders, septic shock, and damage to internal organs such as the heart, lungs, liver, and kidneys.

According to Dr. Dao Tran Tien, a digestive specialist, acute pancreatitis caused by alcohol is common in middle-aged men (over 40 years old), especially those who drink a lot of alcohol regularly.

Dr. Tien emphasized that acute pancreatitis can lead to dangerous complications such as necrotizing pancreatitis, hypovolemic shock, or organ failure. Some patients may face kidney failure, respiratory failure, and even death if not detected and treated promptly.

When signs of acute pancreatitis are detected, the patient needs to go to the hospital for emergency care and timely treatment. In the first few days, the patient needs to fast to help the pancreas recover. Sometimes the doctor will prescribe intravenous nutrition to ensure the patient's health.

At some general medical facilities in Hanoi, according to the reporter's investigation, the number of patients hospitalized due to acute pancreatitis has increased by 30% compared to previous months, and 20% compared to the same period in 2024. Cases of acute pancreatitis are often diagnosed due to alcohol abuse, increased triglycerides, gallstones or gastrointestinal problems.

To prevent acute pancreatitis, according to Dr. Vu Truong Khanh, Head of the Department of Gastroenterology at Tam Anh General Hospital in Hanoi, people should reduce or avoid drinking alcohol, especially during the holidays.

It is important to maintain a healthy diet, limit foods high in fat and protein, eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, drink enough water, and not smoke.

In addition, patients should also control endocrine diseases such as diabetes, liver disease, or diabetes mellitus, and maintain a healthy lifestyle with regular exercise.

Experts also note that people with a history of acute pancreatitis should limit alcohol, avoid eating too much protein and fat, and maintain a balanced diet. This helps reduce the risk of recurrence and improve overall health.
