(Dan Tri) - Encouraged by the school board and villagers, Ms. Hoang Thanh Tung decided to take the pedagogical exam and has been involved in preschool education for the past 20 years.
Encouraged by villagers to become a teacher
Ms. Hoang Thanh Tung got married in Krong Buk district (Dak Lak). In September 2003, Ms. Tung was still doing housework at home. At that time, there were a total of 20 school-age children in the village who were not able to go to school. The closest kindergarten to them was Hoa Hue kindergarten (Krong Buk, Dak Lak), but the school was more than 10km away from the village.
At that time, Hoa Hue Kindergarten was short of teachers. Ms. Thanh Tung was personally visited by the school's principal and encouraged to teach. She said: "In the village, I am the only one with a 12/12 education level. The villagers also wanted me to help teach the children how to read the alphabet and count numbers. Therefore, I decided to register for the teacher training exam."
In April 2004, Ho Chi Minh City University of Education opened its first university class in Dak Lak province. Ms. Thanh Tung studied for the exam and was admitted to the school. She went to school and taught children at the same time. In 2005, she transferred to work at the Hoa Mi private facility in Krong Nang district.
"I came to the teaching profession by chance and fate. I love the shyness and innocence of children. The eyes when they attentively and enthusiastically listen to me teach. The melodies and songs that they hum in each lesson make my love for the profession even deeper," Ms. Tung confided.
Ms. Tung has been transferred to many kindergartens from 2007 to 2015 because the district lacked teachers. After that, she returned to Hoa Cuc Trang kindergarten (Krong Nang, Dak Lak) from September 2015 until now.
After more than 20 years of working as a preschool teacher, Ms. Hoang Thanh Tung has not only achieved many outstanding achievements in experience initiatives and competitions at all levels, but she is also honored to receive the title of Outstanding Teacher in 2024.
Ms. Le Thi Dieu, Ms. Tung's colleague at Hoa Cuc Trang Kindergarten, commented: "Ms. Hoang Thanh Tung is a capable teacher. Ms. Tung always completes the assigned tasks well.
To her students, she is a close, warm and devoted teacher. To her colleagues, Ms. Tung always helps and cares for us whenever we encounter difficulties."
Teaching at a school 35km away from home, no electricity
Sharing with Dan Tri reporter, Ms. Tung said that from her house to Hoa Cuc Trang kindergarten, where Ms. Hoang Thanh Tung is working, is more than 35km. The school has no electricity or shops, so every morning, Ms. Tung has to wake up very early to prepare lunch.
"The road to school is a muddy dirt road. On the first day of class, I cried as I walked because it was so difficult to move. Many days when it rained, the road was slippery and I fell. So my rice was spilled. I had to go hungry.
I have never faced such poverty. A remote school with no electricity, dilapidated classrooms and students lacking everything. These are the difficulties that teachers and children here have to face every day," she shared.
Ms. Tung also said that the road has been rebuilt but traveling during the rainy season is still a challenge for both students and teachers.
Ms. Thanh Tung could never forget the image of the first day she received the class: The students' frugal lunch consisted of only rice and salt in a plastic bag, while the "richer" students had a few dried fish. After that, she tried to contact benefactors and donated lunch boxes, clothes, new school bags and many other items to the school.
"In addition to meals from charity groups, we also encourage parents to use government subsidies to improve the quality of meals for children," Ms. Tung shared.
As a preschool teacher working in a particularly difficult area where the majority of students are ethnic minorities, Ms. Thanh Tung realized that the awareness of local people in sending children to school is not high.
During her time working at the kindergartens, Ms. Tung and her colleagues went to each household many times to encourage parents to send their children to school. As a result, she and the school mobilized 98% of children of the right age to attend school. Particularly for 5-year-old children, the class size and preschool graduation rate always reached 100%.
"I will always remember the first Vietnamese Teachers' Day in my life. Parents and students gave me a bunch of bananas, corn, sugarcane and some flowers picked by the children on the roadside. We happily celebrated and sang. It was an emotional moment that I will always remember.
In a particularly difficult area, sometimes simplicity is also a luxury gift for us," Ms. Tung said emotionally.
With unconditional love, Ms. Tung overcame the immediate difficulties to bring literacy back to the village. When the new school year began, Ms. Tung continuously checked and called the attendance of each child in class. If a child did not come to class for several days, Ms. Tung would immediately go to the parents' homes to persuade them to go to school.
"During the campaign, I was also rejected by some families. Part of the reason was because of the economic burden they had to bear. However, in recent years, thanks to preferential policies for children in especially difficult areas, parents have actively sent their children back to school. Currently, almost 100% of 5-year-old children in the district have attended class," Ms. Thanh Tung informed.
For Ms. Hoang Thanh Tung, although being a preschool teacher is somewhat difficult, this is also a profession that is always interested, encouraged and honored by society. This is also a joy and motivation for Ms. Tung to continue to strive.
"I hope that all levels, sectors and units always pay attention to particularly difficult areas in general and Hoa Cuc Trang Kindergarten in particular. From there, not only me, but also teachers working in these areas can feel secure in continuing to carry out their educational mission," said Ms. Tung.
