Hydropower sources are more promising, no need to mobilize oil for electricity generation

VTC NewsVTC News11/06/2023

According to data from the National Power System Dispatch Center (A0), the total load of the power system on June 10 reached 788.3 million kWh; of which the North was estimated at 384.6 million kWh, the Central region at 73.2 million kWh, and the South at 330.1 million kWh.

The peak power capacity of the power system (Pmax) at 3:00 p.m. reached 36,823.6 MW. However, the peak capacity of the North - Central - South regions occurred at different times. Specifically, the peak capacity in the South reached 16,048.5 MW at 3:00 p.m. Meanwhile, the peak capacity in the North reached 18,223.4 MW at 11:00 p.m., and in the Central region reached 3,613.3 MW at 4:30 p.m.

On June 10, the total output mobilized from hydropower was about 149 million kWh (the North was 59 million kWh); coal-fired thermal power mobilized 439 million kWh (the North was 262.9 million kWh); gas turbines mobilized 85.9 million kWh; renewable energy electricity was over 79 million kWh, of which wind power was 37.3 million kWh, the highest capacity at 12:30 reached 2,339.7 MW, grid-connected solar farm power mobilized 42.1 million kWh, the highest capacity at 10:30 reached 5,875 MW. Oil-fired power did not need to be mobilized.

Regarding transitional renewable energy projects, as of June 10, 51 projects with a total capacity of 2,852 MW have submitted to the Ministry of Industry and Trade for approval of temporary electricity prices, 8 plants are undergoing testing, 14 plants have completed testing, and 9 plants have entered commercial operation (COD).

According to A0 representative, the coal fuel source for production is sufficient, but due to the need to mobilize large and continuous capacity, some generators still have problems. Of which, long-term problems are about 2,100 MW, short-term problems are about 410 MW (Nghi Son 1 S1 to June 12, Son Dong S2 to June 12).

It is expected that by June 12, Unit 1 of Nghi Son 1 Thermal Power Plant will have resolved the problem. Unit 2 of Thai Binh Thermal Power Plant has successfully started up and connected to the grid at 11:15 p.m. on June 10.

Notably, the hydropower situation in the North on June 10 was more positive than on June 9. The water flow to the lakes increased, but the large lakes were still close to dead water level. Specifically, water flow (m3/s): Lai Chau = 276, Son La = 405, Hoa Binh = 94, Ban Chat = 59.3, Tuyen Quang = 88.7.

Due to difficulties in water resources, the total capacity that cannot be mobilized from Son La, Lai Chau, Ban Chat, Huoi Quang, Tuyen Quang, Thac Ba, Hua Na, Ban Ve lakes... is about 5,000 MW.

Although operational management solutions have been implemented, due to difficulties in power sources, the maximum capacity reduction in the North is about 1,300 MW.

"The Ministry of Industry and Trade and EVN continuously direct, urge, and seek all solutions to strengthen the operation of power sources, flexibly operate reservoirs in the context of water shortages in large hydroelectric reservoirs, urge thermal power plants to prioritize handling incidents of generators, ensure coal and gas supply for power generation, actively supplement renewable energy sources for the system; strengthen the safe operation of the Central-Northern transmission system; continue to implement the Prime Minister's directive on electricity saving...," said the A0 representative.
