Power supply is very difficult, EVN proposes to develop a plan to reduce power supply

Sharing with the press on May 17, Mr. Mai Van Khiem, Director of the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, said that with the data recorded up to this point, the El Nino phenomenon could appear in the second half of this summer and last until 2024, with a probability of about 70 - 80%.

Widespread heat and below-average rainfall will make it difficult for many hydropower plants to maintain power generation.

El Nino often causes rainfall deficits in most areas of the country, with a common level of 25-50%. Therefore, many areas with high water demand for production and daily life are at high risk of local or widespread drought during the dry months this year.

According to Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN), the intense heat from the beginning of summer and little rain are seriously affecting hydroelectric reservoirs, making power supply in the coming months very difficult.

Directing at the working session with EVN and the Vietnam National Oil and Gas Group, Vietnam National Coal and Mineral Industries Group and Dong Bac Corporation on May 13, Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien requested EVN and enterprises to "do everything possible to avoid power shortages during the hot season".

However, in the context of hydroelectric reservoirs gradually running out of water as present, this is a very difficult task, as Vietnam's electricity supply mainly comes from thermal power and hydroelectricity.

In the current situation, in the document dated May 15 sent to localities to direct the implementation of electricity saving, EVN requested that provinces and cities direct relevant departments, branches and sectors to coordinate with power corporations and power companies to develop plans and implement the suspension and reduction of electricity supply in the area according to Articles 5 and 6 of Circular No. 22/2020/TT-BCT dated September 9, 2020 of the Ministry of Industry and Trade on regulations on conditions and procedures for suspension and reduction of electricity supply.

In the telegram directing the proactive implementation of urgent measures to respond to the risk of heat, drought, water shortage, and saltwater intrusion issued on May 15, the Prime Minister requested the Ministry of Industry and Trade to direct the review of electricity production plans in the context of water shortages at hydroelectric reservoirs to have proactive plans to ensure electricity supply for production and people's daily life; prioritize water from hydroelectric reservoirs to serve the prevention and control of drought, water shortage, and saltwater intrusion.

The Prime Minister also requested ministries, branches and localities to do a good job of disseminating and propagating awareness of saving electricity, especially during the peak hot months. For large hydroelectric reservoirs, the Ministry of Industry and Trade and EVN will calculate and propose flexible operations to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment for appraisal and submission to competent authorities for consideration and decision in order to effectively exploit and save water resources.
