Chinese visitors to Cambodia increase by more than 400%, still behind Thai and Vietnamese tourists

The above figure accounts for 10% of the total number of international tourists to Cambodia last year, according to the Khmer Times today, January 20.

Cambodia attracted a total of 5.45 million foreign tourists in 2023, up nearly 140% from 2.27 million international visitors in 2022, the Ministry of Tourism added.

China is also the third largest source of foreign tourists to Cambodia after Thailand and Vietnam, according to the new report. About 1.82 million Thais and nearly 1.02 million Vietnamese visited Cambodia last year, up 113 percent and 120 percent, respectively, according to the report.

Last week, Cambodia and China jointly launched the 2024 Year of People-to-People Exchange initiative to further enhance cultural exchanges and boost tourism.

Cambodia's Ministry of Tourism spokesman Top Sopheak said the kingdom is looking forward to welcoming more Chinese tourists, stressing that their presence has contributed significantly to Cambodia's economic and tourism development as well as poverty reduction.

China was the largest source of international tourists to Cambodia before the Covid-19 pandemic. Cambodia recorded 2.36 million Chinese tourists in 2019, accounting for 35.7% of total international tourist arrivals and generating about $1.8 billion in revenue, according to the Cambodian Ministry of Tourism.
