According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), in the first half of March 2024, Vietnam's pangasius exports to Canada reached 2.3 million USD, up 7% over the same period last year. As of March 15, 2024, Canada imported more than 8 million USD worth of pangasius from Vietnam, up 43% over the same period in 2023. Currently, Canada remains the second largest market in the CPTPP bloc for Vietnamese pangasius consumption, accounting for 20% of the total value of this bloc's imports from Vietnam.
Pangasius exports to Canada receive many positive signals |
Assessing the prospects of pangasius in the Canadian market, VASEP said that, compared to other markets in the CPTPP bloc, Canadian consumers are very fond of dishes made from pangasius fillets, frozen catfish fillets, frozen pangasius slices/chunks/chunks, etc. Citing data from the International Trade Center (ITC), VASEP said that in January 2024, Canada imported more than 900 tons from Vietnam, worth 2 million USD, down 10% in value and up 28% in volume compared to the same period last year. In 2023, Vietnam will be the source of white fish (mainly pangasius) for Canada with more than 9,000 tons, worth nearly 31 million USD.
Canada is a large consumer market with high demand for seafood products, especially pangasius. However, this is also a demanding market, with strict inspections of imported goods. In addition, Vietnamese pangasius products in this market also face great competition from many other types of fish on the market, especially frozen cod and fresh or chilled tilapia.
To maintain and develop this market in the future, VASEP noted that businesses need to understand the regulations and comply with all requirements of Canadian importers; at the same time, continue to invest in improving product quality. In addition, building stable and long-term partnerships is also very important, especially cooperation with distributors and retailers in Canada to ensure that Vietnamese products reach consumers in the most effective way.
