Great job opportunity
Oil and gas are known as the “black gold” of the world. Oil and gas exploitation has become a key economic sector for many countries, including Vietnam. Therefore, human resources in this field are increasingly “hunted” by businesses and corporations.
Speaking with Lao Dong Newspaper reporters, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Viet Ha - Head of Public Relations and Business, University of Mining and Geology, assessed that oil and gas is an industry "thirsty for human resources".
“In contrast to the demand for labor resources, the oil and gas industry or related industries such as mining, geology... do not attract candidates to register for admission. The school continuously receives orders from businesses but the number of graduates is not enough to meet the demand,” said Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Viet Ha.
Explaining the shortage of labor resources, MSc. Nguyen Kim Chung - Deputy Head of Corporate Public Relations Department, University of Mining and Geology said that candidates do not really understand this training industry.
“Currently, hot majors and hot schools have high enrollment rates and strong competition. However, these majors may soon become saturated in the future due to supply exceeding demand.
Meanwhile, oil and gas in particular and the engineering majors of the University of Mining and Geology in general are very specific and necessary for society. Job opportunities for graduates of these majors are much more open" - Master Nguyen Kim Chung shared.
Dream income
Sharing about the income of Petroleum engineers, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Viet Ha said: “Students graduating from Petroleum can work at specialized research institutes or directly at offshore oil and gas rigs with very modern automated machinery systems. The starting salary that businesses pay students is relatively high, from 20 million VND/month or more.”
Learning and listening to advice on this issue, Nguyen Duc Huy - a fourth-year student of the Faculty of Petroleum and Energy, University of Mining and Geology said that salary depends on the ability of each individual.
“Technical personnel in the oil and gas industry are considered “thousand-dollar engineers”. However, the salary level depends largely on each person’s professional capacity, good foreign language skills, and problem-solving ability. In addition, salaries in the oil and gas industry also increase rapidly according to position and seniority,” said Duc Huy.
According to the male student, he chose to study Petroleum because there is a great demand for labor, good treatment, and students have the opportunity to work domestically and internationally. However, to have wide-open opportunities, students need to have a rich knowledge and experience.
“The petroleum industry is mainly taught in English, so good foreign language skills are an advantage. In addition, during the learning process, you should promote self-study, self-research, and set short-term and long-term learning goals. By completing the set goals, you will have accumulated knowledge and experience,” Duc Huy advised.
