Responding to a question about Turkey's chances of becoming a BRICS member, Dmitry Peskov said that from the BRICS point of view and the main approach, the group does not pose any barriers, including being a member of the European Union (EU) or the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
Earlier, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that the country really wants to develop cooperation with BRICS.
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan confirmed that Ankara is interested in joining the bloc of developing countries.
Previously, at the sideline event of the BRICS Summit in Kazan (held on October 22-24), the Kremlin spokesman said: "Türkiye's accession to BRICS is very important for all members.
Türkiye is a big country that plays an important role in global affairs, so everyone is interested in BRICS inviting Türkiye to join the group."
He pointed out that, in principle, the group does not set conditions for participating countries and partners.
"BRICS does not make rules or treaties binding on member countries. The most important thing is that members need to have a unified view, sharing a vision of prospects and development, possibly in politics, economics and culture," the Kremlin spokesman affirmed.
