"There has never been a better harvest than this year"
In just 2 days, the family of Mrs. Le Thi Tham, Tan Thuong hamlet, Hau Thanh commune, Yen Thanh has finished harvesting 5 sao of rice planted with Thai Xuyen 111 and ND502 varieties. "The rice is full of flowers, the grains are full and heavy, never before has the spring crop been as good as this year, the yield is up to nearly 4 quintals/sao", Mrs. Tham happily said.
In previous years, despite good care, her family's rice fields only yielded about 3 quintals per sao at most. Not only that, this year's spring rice has few pests and diseases, and almost no need to use pesticides, so costs have decreased significantly and value has increased.
As one of the localities producing the spring crop the earliest in the province, by May 20, the spring rice fields of Yen Thanh district had been harvested. According to Mr. Le Van Hong - Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, this year's spring rice yield reached nearly 75 quintals/ha (the spring crop in 2023 reached 73.03 quintals/ha).
Not only is the harvest good, the price of rice is also very good. Fresh rice is purchased right at the field at a price of 680,000 - 750,000 VND/quintal depending on the variety, even Thai Xuyen 111 rice is up to 800,000 VND/quintal. "The whole district has 3,700 hectares of rice produced with links between farmers, cooperatives and enterprises, with a yield of 76 - 77 quintals/sao, and fresh rice is purchased right at the field. Not only in the linked areas, but also in other areas, fresh rice is also "hunted", the demand for purchase is high", said Mr. Le Van Hong.
The crop calendar in nearly 3,000 hectares of low-lying areas was moved forward by 10 days, and other areas also strictly followed the crop calendar, so spring crop production in Yen Thanh avoided the disadvantages of the weather right from the beginning of the season. When there was severe cold at the beginning of the season, the rice plants had grown well and were not damaged; during the rice panicle formation and flowering stages, there was no cold air and cloudy weather, so pollination was good and the cotton produced high yields; even during storms at the end of the season, production was not much damaged because the spring rice was harvested early.
Advanced varieties with over 70% of the production area using pure quality rice varieties such as Bac Thom, TBR225... have not only created productivity and output but also increased production value. The whole district has 6,500 hectares of synchronous mechanization from land preparation, spraying pesticides by drones to harvesting; more than 4,000 hectares of machine planting, using tray seedlings supplied by Tho Thanh, Lien Thanh, Nam Thanh, Trung Thanh and Minh Thanh Cooperatives, and production linkages; many models of organic rice production, IPHM rice production to limit the use of pesticides in production...
Since May 10, Mr. Pham Van Khai's family in Hung Linh commune, Hung Nguyen has started harvesting spring rice. The yield of his family's 5 sao of rice reached more than 3 quintals/sao, higher than the 2023 spring crop (2.8 quintals/sao). "This year the weather is more favorable, with fewer pests and diseases," said Mr. Khai. Up to now, Hung Nguyen has harvested nearly 4,700 hectares/5,100 hectares of spring rice. Mr. Le Viet Hung - Deputy Director of the District Agricultural Service Center said: The yield is higher than last year's spring crop, estimated at 68-70 quintals/sao. Along with the victory in productivity, the production value of Hung Nguyen's spring crop is also very high with more than 70% of the area being pure quality rice varieties such as Bac Thinh, AC5, HD11... which are being converted by the communes.
With the support capital used effectively and reasonably, and with strong leadership, this spring crop, Hung Nguyen has built 42 large model fields with an area of approximately 1,000 hectares, accounting for nearly 20% of the district's rice area with a synchronous and unified production process, high productivity, and consistent quality compared to unlinked production, with guaranteed product purchase; production according to advanced processes ICM, SRI, and improved rice production programs adapting to climate change. In particular, carbon credit rice production has begun in Chau Nhan commune.
In the spring crop alone, more than 60 training sessions for farmers on production techniques and pest control were organized; the district allocated budget to support farmers in covering seedlings with plastic to protect them from the cold from the beginning of the crop, thanks to which more than 80% of the seedling area has been covered with plastic. For areas with direct sowing, Hung Nguyen focused on propaganda and advising farmers to strictly follow the crop calendar, thanks to which they were able to basically avoid and withstand unfavorable weather conditions, severe cold at the beginning of the crop.
Spring crop victory overall
This year's spring crop in Nghe An was a fairly successful production season. According to information from the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, through actual field assessments, rice yield is estimated at about 69.15 quintals/ha, the highest ever.
This year's weather conditions are relatively favorable; there is cold at the beginning of the season but not very cold, only moderate cold, and each cold spell does not last long, thanks to which the rice plants have time to recover, grow and develop very evenly. The victory also comes from the drastic direction of the crop calendar, pest control, irrigation regulation to serve the rice plants...
Although this is also a favorable condition for pests to develop, thanks to timely forecasting and prevention, Nghe An has controlled and prevented pests very well, especially rice blast disease from the beginning and middle of the crop, especially at the rice flowering stage, limiting the impact on productivity.
Especially in the spring crop this year, localities and farmers have strictly followed the crop calendar set by the Department of Agriculture, thanks to which, at important development times of rice such as sowing, earing, and flowering, they have basically avoided unfavorable weather factors. Thanks to the alternating rains, although there was a local water shortage in some areas requiring emergency measures and releasing water from hydroelectric reservoirs, the water source was basically favorable, meeting production needs.
New, high-yield, good-quality varieties are increasingly introduced, helping to increase productivity and output, as well as increase production value, bringing high income to farmers.
Up to now, Nghe An has harvested nearly 70,000 hectares of spring rice. Localities are continuing to direct the taking advantage of favorable weather conditions, focusing on quickly harvesting spring rice on ripe rice areas to ensure the summer-autumn production schedule; In areas that have been harvested, people are urgently going to the fields to produce summer-autumn according to the motto "the sooner the better", especially in low-lying areas, flooded at the end of the season.
