The unbelievable story began when Mr. Helaram Malik, a shop owner in Howrah town, West Bengal state, made a trip to Balasore district in Odisha state, 230 km away, to look for his son after the accident on June 2, according to the Times of India .

The accident involved three trains, including two passenger trains, killing at least 275 people and injuring more than 1,100. Among the victims was Biswajit Malik (24 years old), the son of Mr. Helaram.

Biswajit was taken to the station by his father to board the ill-fated Coromandel Express. Hours later, Mr Helaram heard about the accident and immediately called his son.

Despite his injuries, Biswajit was able to pick up the phone and replied in a weak voice that he was still alive but in great pain.

Without hesitation, Mr. Helaram immediately contacted an ambulance driver to head to Balasore and arrived there on the night of June 2. He and his relatives visited all the hospitals in the area but could not find his son.

They were directed to Bahanaga High School in the area, which was being used as a temporary morgue to store the bodies. "We couldn't accept the fact but we went to try it anyway," said Mr Helaram.

Relatives wait to receive the coffin of an accident victim at a hospital in Odisha

When he arrived, Mr. Helaram and his relatives were not allowed to search for him. The mournful atmosphere suddenly became chaotic when someone noticed the arm of a body shaking. Mr. Helaram went to see and discovered that it was his son. The victim was taken to the hospital for a blood transfusion. The doctor suggested transferring Biswajit to another hospital in the area, but Mr. Helaram signed a consent form and asked to be transferred to a hospital in the city of Kolkata, closer to his home.

Ambulance driver Palash Pandit said the victim remained unconscious throughout the journey home. After being admitted to hospital, Biswajit underwent ankle surgery on June 4 and leg surgery on June 5. His right arm, which was shaking, was fractured in multiple places.

Regarding the fact that Biswajit was still alive but was taken to the morgue, forensic expert Somnath Das of Bankura Sammilani Medical College (India) explained to Times of India that the victim may have fallen into a state of pseudo-death, when the biological functions of the body temporarily stop working. This condition can occur when a person is in a traumatic situation or in some cases such as drowning.

Because the victim had multiple injuries and was examined in a hurry, the medical professionals at the scene may not have had enough time to check his vital signs thoroughly. Furthermore, because the number of victims in this accident was so large, people without medical expertise were also mobilized for the rescue operation. Therefore, it is possible that they mistook the seriously injured and unconscious victim for dead.
