Conquering mushroom growing

Having been involved in mushroom growing for nearly 5 years, in the early years when she first started, she had no experience so she failed many times. With determination, perseverance, and hard work, Ms. Anh has gradually mastered the process and produced more and more effectively.

Ms. Bui Thi Anh said: “Realizing that oyster mushrooms and wood ear mushrooms are popular foods among consumers. However, these products sold in the market are mainly imported from other places. Thinking that people in other regions can produce them but not in my area, while the materials for growing mushrooms are easy to find, I started to research and build a mushroom growing model.”

In 2020, after researching, Ms. Anh went to the Center for Mushroom Development and Biological Resources Research (Department of Science and Technology of Ha Tinh) to buy 10 bags of mushroom spawn to hang. Although she had researched the care process quite thoroughly, the first batch of mushrooms did not give the expected results. The mushroom buds were stunted, some were attacked by fungal diseases, and the yield was low. Ms. Anh was not discouraged but considered it a lesson to continue for the next time.

Every year, the white oyster mushroom and gray oyster mushroom growing facility of Ms. Bui Thi Anh, Nam Tien village, Ky Bac commune, Ky Anh district (Ha Tinh province) supplies 10 tons of oyster mushrooms and 15,000 - 20,000 bags of spawn. Photo: PV

With that mindset, perseverance, hard work, and a keen eye for science and technology, the next batches of mushrooms were gradually improved and produced better products. After nearly 2 years of "studying hard", from just buying bags of spawn to hang, Ms. Anh's mushroom production facility has successfully grown and reproduced mushroom seeds to be proactive in production and provide bags of spawn to many households in need.

Raw materials for growing white oyster mushrooms and gray oyster mushrooms are mainly straw, cotton waste, sawdust, bagasse, coffee bean husks, etc. Photo: PV

To meet the growing demand of the market, in addition to the previous 500m2 mushroom production workshop, in early 2024, the facility expanded an additional 800m2 workshop specializing in hanging spawn bags. The workshop is invested in a systematic way with solid iron hanging racks, spawn bag steaming racks, cold storage for preserving mushrooms and many machines and equipment invested to build a closed process, with a scale of nearly 100 tons of raw materials/year. This method helps increase productivity and reduce labor, thereby reducing costs.

According to Ms. Anh, mushroom growing is not too complicated, but if you do not understand the technical process, it is difficult to succeed. Therefore, in production, Ms. Anh always adheres to each stage, from raw materials, seeds, drying, steaming, care, harvesting, product preservation, and criteria on temperature and light.

From planting to harvesting, no stimulants or preservatives are used. The irrigation water must be clean to eliminate pests from the beginning. The products supplied to the market are always clean and hygienic.

Counting millions every day

Currently, the main products of the facility are white oyster mushrooms and gray oyster mushrooms. With 20,000 bags, each year it harvests 10 tons of oyster mushrooms. In addition, each year the facility also sells 15,000-20,000 bags of spawn to households in need.

According to Ms. Bui Thi Anh, Nam Tien village, Ky Bac commune, Ky Anh district (Ha Tinh province), the mushroom bags are transferred to the nursery, placed on shelves, with a distance of 5-7cm between the bags. The nursery needs to be airy, clean and does not need light. Photo: PV

According to Ms. Anh's calculations, the current selling price is 40,000 - 45,000 VND/kg of oyster mushrooms and 7,000 - 8,000 VND/bag of mushroom spawn, each year the family has an income of over 250 million VND. It is worth mentioning that the oyster mushroom products at Ms. Anh's facility always ensure food hygiene and safety, and are trusted and ordered by many customers.

Currently, Ms. Anh's mushroom growing facility is creating jobs for 6 local workers with a salary of about 5 million/person/month and many seasonal workers.

“In the future, the family will continue to invest in an automatic irrigation system and produce more mushrooms with high economic value such as Lingzhi and Green Lim mushrooms. At the same time, we will learn more information and research new methods in the direction of applying science and technology to reduce production costs, improve productivity and quality, and meet market tastes and demands,” Ms. Anh added.

Accumulating experience, proactively applying science and technology in production, and approaching new models have helped Ms. Bui Thi Anh's family successfully build a mushroom growing model with high economic efficiency right on their homeland.

Speaking to Dan Viet reporter, Mr. Phan Chi Nguyen - Vice Chairman of Ky Bac Commune People's Committee, said: "The local government highly appreciates the mushroom growing model of Mrs. Bui Thi Anh's family. This is the first large-scale model of the commune, bringing high efficiency, opening up a new direction in local economic development.

"Currently, the Commune People's Committee is supporting and guiding the completion of the procedures and documents to build Ms. Anh's mushroom products to participate in the 3-star OCOP product program in 2024," said Mr. Nguyen Chi Nguyen.

“In the coming time, the Commune People's Committee will continue to coordinate with specialized units at all levels to organize training and provide technical guidance on mushroom production for local people. At the same time, create favorable conditions for local people to access capital sources to develop production models, encourage local people to expand the development of mushroom growing models, and increase income,” said Mr. Phan Chi Nguyen - Vice Chairman of the Ky Bac Commune People's Committee.
