Learn to grow mushrooms from books, newspapers and TV

Veteran Phan Huy Tuan (born in 1960) was discharged from the army in 1983. Talking to us, Mr. Tuan was proud that he was a soldier with many years on the battlefield "tasting honey and lying on thorns", facing many difficulties and challenges that helped him forge an iron will, not afraid of difficulties, hardships, and not afraid of anything.

After being discharged from the army and returning to his hometown, Mr. Tuan struggled to develop the family economy, worked enthusiastically in production, and saved every penny to have capital to do business.

Sharing with us about his chance to grow mushrooms, veteran Phan Huy Tuan said: "After I was discharged from the army and returned to my hometown, my family's life was difficult and arduous, so I did many jobs to make a living and take care of my wife and children, from raising chickens and ducks, then raising pigs, working as a construction worker, working as a builder...

But small-scale livestock farming is ineffective, affects the environment, and diseases are difficult to control. Being a construction worker is hard work, and over time, your health will not allow it…

So I learned about economic development models from books, newspapers, and TV and was quite interested in the model of growing edible mushrooms."

With the determination of a veteran, Mr. Phan Huy Tuan has become a typical example in economic development in the locality. Not only is he good at growing mushrooms, at the age of over 60, veteran Phan Huy Tuan was elected as Secretary and Village Chief of Hoa Binh village, Ky Phong commune.

In 2016, Mr. Tuan went to the Center for Research and Development of Mushrooms and Biological Resources (Department of Science and Technology of Ha Tinh) to buy 10 bags of oyster mushroom spawn to try hanging at home.

During the care process, he noticed that the mushrooms grew well and yielded regular harvests. From then on, he began to learn more about the techniques of caring for mushrooms to expand.

According to Mr. Tuan, oyster mushrooms (also known as abalone mushrooms) are a clean food, have high economic value, are rich in nutrients, and require little land to produce.

In the early years, his family produced 30-50kg of mushrooms per day, selling them at markets in Ky Anh district. Realizing that oyster mushrooms were popular and had a favorable market, Mr. Tuan decided to expand the scale of production.

"I want to expand the scale and build a factory to develop mushroom growing, but the biggest difficulty for me is still capital.

However, with my own determination and support from friends and relatives, especially from the local government in supporting loans and creating conditions for me to visit mushroom growing models in the North, all difficulties were gradually overcome" - Mr. Tuan recalled.

Good examples of veterans doing good business

On average, Mr. Tuan's family harvests over 100kg of mushrooms every day. Photo: NH

Up to now, veteran Phan Huy Tuan owns a mushroom farm with an area of 850m2 (including a 620m2 factory for growing edible mushrooms, a 230m2 factory for producing spawn bags), with a total investment cost of over 1 billion VND.

Mr. Tuan said: "Although investing in a greenhouse to grow mushrooms is quite expensive, it is durable and sturdy, and there is no need to worry about rain or wind damaging or wetting the straw in the winter. In the summer, the temperature increases, but the farm owner can adjust it through a ceiling system with added insulation foam and a floor irrigation system. Therefore, my farm can produce mushrooms all year round and is highly effective."

According to Mr. Tuan, the mushroom growing model has the advantage of taking advantage of locally available raw materials for producing mushroom growing bags such as sawdust and post-harvest straw, thus greatly reducing costs.

However, mushroom cultivation also faces many difficulties because mushrooms are very sensitive to changes in weather, light, and diseases, especially because they can be parasitic flies and mosquitoes that lay eggs and destroy the embryo. Therefore, producers need to follow the correct technical process so that mushrooms can grow and develop well.

For each type of mushroom, there will be different growing and care techniques, but to get high quality mushroom yield, it is necessary to strictly select the breed, then the mushroom fermentation material must be clean, then the mushroom quality will be achieved, the yield will be much higher.

For oyster mushrooms, the ingredients must be ground, mixed well, then packed in nylon bags, sterilized by steaming, and then inoculated.

Incubate each bag of mushrooms for 20-30 days until the mycelium covers the entire bag. Then use a sharp knife to make 6-9 cuts around the mushroom bag. The cuts must be 2-3 cm wide and 4-5 cm deep.

After 7-10 days of cutting, mushrooms begin to grow from the cuts. When the mushroom cap diameter reaches 3-4cm, they are harvested. Mushroom picking and cleaning are also very important to avoid affecting the yield and quality of mushrooms.

Thanks to his perseverance and hard work, veteran Phan Huy Tuan's mushroom farm is growing.

With 2 factories, each year, Mr. Tuan makes 17,000 bags of spawn, supplying the market with nearly 10 tons of oyster mushrooms; producing 20,000 spawns to provide seeds to people in need.

With the current selling price of 40,000 - 45,000 VND/kg of oyster mushrooms, 7,000 - 8,000 VND/bag of mushroom spawn, Mr. Tuan's family earns over 200 million VND per year.

His family's oyster mushroom products ensure food hygiene and safety, so many customers trust and order them. Currently, Mr. Tuan's mushroom growing facility is creating jobs for 5 local workers, with a salary of about 4.5 million VND/person/month, and many seasonal workers.

In addition to oyster mushroom products, Mr. Tuan is investing in growing straw mushrooms, medicinal mushrooms with high economic value such as lingzhi mushrooms, green lim mushrooms and is always ready to share mushroom growing experiences with people in need to develop the economy together and escape poverty.
