Dropping out of medical school after 1.5 years, planning to study abroad but failing, Nhat Anh retook the university entrance exam and became an excellent student at Foreign Trade University.

At the end of April, Nguyen Nhat Anh, 24 years old, attended the graduation ceremony for more than 1,000 students who graduated early from Foreign Trade University (FTU). Among the 20 outstanding students, who were awarded by the principal, the young man from Da Nang was the only representative of the Faculty of Law. The male student graduated with honors in International Commercial Law with an average score of 3.66/4.

"Although I finished the program half a year early, it actually took me nearly 6 years to hold my university degree. I have waited for this day for a long time," Anh said.

In 2018, Anh was admitted to a medical school in Hanoi . After studying for more than a year, due to family circumstances, the male student asked for a leave of absence to move to Ho Chi Minh City to prepare his application for studying abroad. But Covid-19 struck, and Anh had to change his plans once again.

In May 2020, Anh decided to take the high school graduation exam as an independent candidate to get the score for university admission. This time, the male student chose Law at Foreign Trade University.

"I want to try a new field," Anh said. He said that although he studied Medicine before, he was still interested in Economics . Realizing that Law is necessary for all activities, Anh wanted to choose a school where he could study both fields.

In high school, Anh studied both block B00 (Math, Chemistry, Biology) and D01 (Math, Literature, English), so he did not have much difficulty reviewing for the exam. Having a foundation in Math and having just taken the IELTS exam while preparing for his study abroad application, Anh mainly studied Literature. The male student reviewed the structure of the exam, how to do each type of question, and learned the main ideas of the work. As a result, Anh scored nearly 27 points, passing the exam as desired.

The second time he "went North" to study at university, Anh was no longer confused. Learning slower than his peers, he set a goal to complete the program as quickly as possible. In addition to the main semesters, Anh took advantage of the two summer semesters, each semester studying 3-4 subjects. The male student's learning method is to focus on thinking and self-criticism, and when encountering difficult problems, he would discuss them with friends or teachers.

Anh also often studies alone, not in groups. According to the male student, specialized exercises often require solving a legal problem, requiring giving personal opinions and arguments to defend.

"This is better if done alone, it helps stimulate logical and critical thinking. Then, I discuss with my friends to make the best choice," Anh said.

With general subjects, Anh passed relatively easily, but specialized subjects were a big challenge.

The subject that Anh found the most difficult was Legal English at the end of his third year. Although his English was quite good, Anh still got it "wrong" because the exercises not only required understanding the situation but also applying knowledge to come up with solutions. The male student reviewed for the exam by going on Youtube, finding listening passages related to law, and doing reading and writing exercises.

"I studied a lot but only got a B (7- below 8.5/10). This was a very memorable subject, not only because of its difficulty but also because it helped me improve my listening and reading skills in English related to law and legal documents," Anh recalled.

Along with studying, Anh experienced many other activities. In the first two years, the male student tried his hand at the field of startups, and was in the top 5 of several related competitions. In the third year, Anh actively participated in volunteer activities such as legal consulting and scientific research.

The male student was most interested in the topic of information security between businesses and employees, which was carried out at the same time as his graduation thesis. Anh and his friend analyzed this situation in Vietnam, proposing solutions based on the experience of France and the US. The research results were published in the magazine of the Vietnam Bar Federation, April issue this year.

Ms. Mai Thi Chuc Hanh, Anh's homeroom teacher, was impressed by her student's Central accent and politeness. She assessed Anh as eager to learn, patient, and creative in her approach to lecture content and activities. These are also necessary qualities for any job position related to the Law industry.

In addition, Anh participates in many events in different roles, such as communication, organization, idea generation, and logistics. "She is very versatile. Not many students in her class can do that," Ms. Hanh commented.

During this time, Anh was applying for a job. There were times when Anh felt pressured because his friends of the same age had achieved certain successes, earning tens of millions of dong per month. In return, he was able to learn and explore himself in a new field.

"So, even though I'm a little slower than my friends, I'm still proud of the experiences and lessons I've had," Anh said.
