Becoming the valedictorian of a specialized math class at a specialized school is already very difficult, but Ha Manh Hung (class 9A, junior high school, Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted) has done this twice.
After the Hanoi Department of Education and Training announced the 10th grade exam scores in 2024, with 2 perfect scores of 10 in Math and English; 8.25 points in Literature and 9.5 points in specialized Math, Ha Manh Hung became the valedictorian of the specialized Math class of Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted.
A 9A male student of the Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted achieved a total score of 47.25 for the specialized entrance exam; 5 points higher than the school's standard score.
If we only count the total admission score of the non-specialized public 10th grade entrance exam, Manh Hung achieved 46.5 - also a very high score.
More impressively, before that, Ha Manh Hung also passed the entrance exam to grade 10 of the National University of Education High School for the Gifted with a conditional math score of 10, and a specialized math score of nearly perfect - 9.75 points.
In particular, in addition to his love for Math, Hung also passed the Physics major exam of Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted and the English major of Foreign Language High School. Before that, he was also directly admitted to the Math major of Natural Science High School (due to his first prize in the city-level excellent student Math competition).
Sharing with VietNamNet , Mr. Cao Van Dung, the homeroom teacher and also the Math teacher of grade 9A, said that he was very happy to hear that Manh Hung had consecutively become the valedictorian of the 10th grade math exam at specialized schools. However, he was not too surprised because he understood his student's academic ability.
“What I am most happy about is that Manh Hung has maintained his form during the exams. Studying well is already very difficult, but maintaining his form throughout many exams is even more difficult. This requires the learner to not only be fully equipped with knowledge but also have a spirit of 'steel', a determined will and a strong character. Manh Hung has all of those things and what he has achieved is not surprising and completely deserved,” said Mr. Dung.
Talking about his student, teacher Dung said, Manh Hung is like a student born to conquer the heights of Mathematics.
“Hung is very intelligent and has been a very successful student since primary school. Even many students in Hanoi know and respect him. Although he is famous, in class, Hung is very simple and gets along with everyone,” said Mr. Dung.
In class, Hung studied all subjects well and was always in the top 1 in average score of the class.
In addition to Math, Manh Hung also participated in the 9th grade Science competition when he was in 8th grade and won second prize at the city level.
“Like other Mathematical talents I have taught, Manh Hung has a very high ability to self-study and research under the guidance of teachers. In the process of learning and accumulating Mathematical knowledge, Manh Hung is always very hard-working, diligent and proactive. That is why he achieves and conquers every goal set very quickly, and the results are rarely disappointing,” said Mr. Dung. The male teacher believes that Manh Hung will go even further in the future.
Teacher Dung said that teacher and student also have many memories together, but perhaps the most impressive and interesting is that every time the teacher writes the wrong question or solves the problem a little bit wrongly, or misses something, Hung often discovers it and always asks the teacher to correct it.
“Manh Hung is always full of energy and very brave. Accompanying Manh Hung, I also spread that positive energy from him. Hung always says he is lucky to be my student, but I feel really lucky to be his teacher,” Mr. Dung shared.
During 4 years of middle school, Manh Hung achieved many outstanding achievements in Math.
In the 9th grade excellent student exam in cultural and scientific subjects of Hanoi in the 2023-2024 school year, Manh Hung was the valedictorian at the district level and won first prize at the city level in Mathematics.
Previously, while in 6th grade, Manh Hung brought home 1 of 2 Gold Medals for the Vietnamese team at the 2021 International Mathematics and Science Olympiad (IMSO) in Indonesia.
Or at the 2021 International Mathematics Competition for Young People, Manh Hung was one of 9 Hanoi students to win a Silver Medal.
Also at this exam in 2022, I won a Gold Medal at the 8th grade level when I was a 7th grade student.
Or at the 2022 American Mathematics Competitions (AMC8), Manh Hung entered the top 1% of high-scoring candidates worldwide with 24/25 points. Previously, at the 2021 AMC8 exam, he achieved a perfect score of 25/25 and was also the youngest candidate to achieve the highest score.
Faced with many choices, Manh Hung and his parents want him to continue to study at Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted at the high school level, not only to study but also to participate in many activities and improve himself in all aspects.
During the 10th grade exam season in 2024, class 9A of the Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted of Manh Hung also achieved many special achievements when there were many other valedictorians and salutatorians... Accordingly, in addition to Manh Hung, this class also has: Nguyen Hoang Minh Quan - valedictorian of the Hanoi public 10th grade exam; Nguyen Tuan Anh - valedictorian of the English major at the National University of Education High School for the Gifted; Vu Nguyen Nguyen - valedictorian of the Physics major at the Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted; Tran Gia Hien - valedictorian of the Math major at the Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted.
Up to this point, according to statistics, class 9A has had many students pass 5 specialized exams from 5 schools. Up to now, 42/43 students of the class have been admitted to grade 10 specialized schools, the remaining student was also accepted by Newton High School to the specialized Math class and awarded a scholarship.
Previously, in the 2024 city-level cultural subject exam for excellent 9th grade students, class 9A also won 6 first prizes in Math, 3 first prizes in English, 2 first prizes in Physics and 1 first prize in Chemistry.
