Despite having to compete with excellent candidates from many countries in the region, Vietnamese female students have won 5 out of 24 scholarships to study in the UK in the STEM field.
Competing with hundreds of applications from many countries, 5 Vietnamese students were selected to receive 5 out of 24 full scholarships in STEM for women (Women in STEM) from the two ASEAN-UK scholarship programs SAGE (Supporting the Advancement of Girls' Education) and Women in STEM of the British Council.
This is the information just announced by the British Council this afternoon, August 14.
Both scholarship programs aim to address gender disparities in access to education in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
The ASEAN-UK SAGE STEM Scholarships are open to women from all ASEAN Member States (AMS) including Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, and Timor-Leste. The British Council Women in STEM Scholarships are open to women from South Asia, East Asia, Greater Europe and the Americas.
Specifically, two female students won STEM scholarships for women under the ASEAN-UK SAGE program: Lam Ngoc Ngan (Master's degree in Interdisciplinary Biology, University of Warwick) and Nguyen Ha Phuong Thao (Master's degree in Technical Business Management, University of Warwick).
Three female students were awarded the British Council's STEM scholarships for women, including Nguyen Vu Tuong Linh (MBA in Business Innovation and Entrepreneurship, University of Bristol), Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy (MBA in Environmental Policy and Management, University of Bristol) and Truong Ngoc Mai (MBA in Science Communication for a Better Planet, University of Bristol).
According to the British Council, these talented female students have all shared their passion and vision of making a difference through STEM, an area where women are often underrepresented.
The British Council said that ASEAN-UK SAGE is the UK’s flagship education programme in ASEAN. It aims to improve outcomes in foundation education in literacy and numeracy, support girls and disadvantaged groups in accessing education, and break down gender barriers to digital skills and employment, helping girls reach their full potential.
The inaugural ASEAN-UK SAGE Women in STEM Scholarship Programme is open to eligible female students from ASEAN Member States and Timor-Leste. This year, 12 outstanding female students received the scholarship.
The ASEAN-UK SAGE Scholarships continue to contribute to the implementation of the goals set out in the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community Action Plan 2025, the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (Goals 4, 10 and 17), and the ASEAN-UK Plan of Action 2022–2026, particularly in strengthening the engagement between UK and ASEAN education institutions, staff and students through scholarship initiatives. These scholarships are developed by the British Council and funded by the UK Government through the ASEAN-UK SAGE programme.
In addition to full funding, Chevening Scholarships also provide scholars with the opportunity to access professional development programmes and cultural experiences in the UK.
Over the past four years, the British Council has awarded over 100 fully-funded scholarships to women from around the world through its Women in STEM Scholarship programme. This year, the scholarships were awarded to 12 scholars from ASEAN countries.
For both the ASEAN-UK SAGE programme and the British Council Women in STEM programme, each scholar will receive a full scholarship to complete a master’s degree at a prestigious UK university. The programme will commence in September 2024.
“We are delighted to be providing this fantastic opportunity to these recently selected outstanding female scholars . Their talent and dedication are inspirational, and we look forward to seeing how they transform and shape their future in STEM in ASEAN after studying at world-class UK universities,” said Sarah Tiffin, UK Ambassador to ASEAN.
It is known that the ASEAN-UK SAGE scholarship program and the British Council's Women in STEM program will accept applications again in January 2025./.
